Did you add sugar? When I make mine I add the sloes and the sugar and then every couple of weeks I taste and add more sugar if needed. It gets better and better with age and I drink it neat. If the sloes are nice and ripe it should taste sweet and syrupy! Yum yum yum yum yum yum mmmmmmmm

Ok, I will give it a taste tonight. I did add sugar which dissolved over a few days.

I have a recipe for sloe gin that seems to work well:

    1. Buy a litre bottle of gin and drink half of it (don't you love recipes that start like that!):D
    2. Top the bottle up with sloes that have been either frozen so they split (either in the freezer or by frost) or pricked/generally mangled to break the skins.
    3. Allow to steep for at least three months - I left some for three years once and it was superb
    4. Strain off the sloes and add a wineglass full (that's 20cl) of sugar to the liquid.
    5. Shake regularly until the sugar has all dissolved. You can add a bit more if you think it needs it.
    6. Enjoy!

You could add the sugar with the sloes, but if you do it this way there's no room in the bottle for it!

We usually have it at Christmas, when it goes down very nicely neat, as a liqueur after Christmas dinner. It will keep indefinitely - if you haven't drunk it all!
If we are supposed to be thin, why does chocolate exist?
  • I also like adding cider to the bottle once you have poured off the gin, that's nice but quite potent!! Sloe gin on its own or in a glass of champagne, mmmm. This year we also have damson and blackberry gin as well as blackberry rum. I'm going to try Sloe Gin & Blackberry jelly. Delicious. It is very sweet though so as someone up there said, more like a liqueur so you wouldn't go on a bender just on Sloe Gin!!!
  • The sloe gin should be ready for christmas. If you mix it with Champagne it is known as a Sloe orgasm

Once your sloe gin is ready, try it as a summer drink mixed with bitter lemon! The colour is great, and it tastes fantastic - it's my favourite :-)
