I have made this toffee vodka several times, you use vodka because it has no taste but is the alcohol part of the drink, I get Lidl's cheapest, normal size bottle, any cheap brand will do.

I use werthers originals, the bag not the tubes which seems to be the right amount. I tip a bit out of the bottle of vodka, about a cup full to make room the the sweets, if there is space in the bottle after you have put the sweets in you can pour some back in so to be really MSE instead of wasting the vodka you may have to drink it!.

I unwrap the werthers originals, and put them on the worktop and give them a bash with my meat hammer thing, just enough to make them small enough to go into the bottle, if there is room put the rest of the vodka in the bottle.

Give it a shake from time to time over a couple of days and the bits all dissolve

It tastes like Baileys to me

You can drink it as it is like a liquer which is how I like it ot put some lemonade or something like that to make it a long drink

I love the idea of pear drops and I will try that next, toblerone sounds good too

I used to be great friends with an elderly man who died several years ago and he introduced me to sloe gin which I had never heard of before. Even if you don't like gin it is lovely, like a liquer

About this time of the year when sloes are in season I think you get a bottle of gin, tip some out or have 2 bottles, one empty and divide the gin between the 2 bottles, pick the sloes fill the gin bottle up with them add some sugar put the lid on and wait until Christmas.

Lots of these old recipes were for preserving things as treats for Christmas

The othe drink that is truly amazing which I have tasted but never made and I had forgotten about until I read this thread is a Rumptofft, not sure of the spelling. I think you get a big bottle or container and as each of the soft fruits come into season, raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries, red and black currants etc you put some rum in the container then a layer of fruit and sprinkle sugar on top put the lid on and leave it until the next soft fruit is in season and keep doing layers of them and the sugar and the rum until the soft fruit season is over then put the lid on a store it until Christmas. This is the most amazing, luxurious drink I have ever tasted and you have to try it to believe just how good it is. You could pour it over ice cream too.

Once you have finished with the sloes in the Gin, try adding them to some very pale sherry. By Easter, you'll have a delicious dark red liquer. Lovely.

Well, there's a thing ;) According to this site you just use them the same way as fresh.

    HTH, Penny. x

Thanks Penny. When I googled "dried sloe" I also got a hit for this site... but it seemed to be the only one that mentioned a recipe.
I was just a little confused:confused: ... as normally with dried herbs and the like.. you use less in quantity than you would use with fresh. And also, dried fruit alway seems to be alot sweeter than the fresh version.

But I am gonna try this....
    1 litre of gin
    250grams of dried sloes
    150-200 grams of sugar

I figured that the dried sloes will increase in size once full of gin (hic)
And I am gonna use slightly less sugar than the same weight of sloes...as I think it will be much easier to put more in if it is not sweet enough, than trying to take some out

I have some gin, and an excess of apples, do you think I could do something with them?

(there may be some brandy in the back of the cupboard too if that would be better; but I'm saving the vodka for Werthers.....)

    Hi OliveOyl,

When I was searching for recipes for sloe gin I came across this website which has lots of recipes for making liqueurs. There are a couple of apple and brandy ones here

I have made some sloe gin from some sloes my friend had picked. It's been "brewing" for about three weeks now.

Problem is, how do you drink it? - neat, with a mixer of some kind?
Secondly, when is the best time to drink it? Will it keep? Should I remove the fruit before drinking it at all?

    Thanks!

I drink it with caution :rotfl:I love the stuff and have always drank it neat because you're turning the vodka/gin into a liquer by adding the sugar. I 'brew' it for 3 months with the berries in, then strain through muslin. They say it improves with age (like storing it for over a year once strained) but I wouldn't know about that :o

  • I leave the sloes in for about three months, then take them out and add them to a bottle of pale sherry. In another three months you'll have another great very dark liqueur.....
