    Thanks Dave,

So mine has a similar weight of sloes per 750ml gin but half the sugar compared to the recipe posted. Mine is still fairly sweet as well

  • 800g sloes
    1500ml gin
    400g of sugar.

    How do these quantities sound?

I use the same recipe as in this link

    http://www.webhistoryofengland.com/?p=317

also a similar recipe on http://www.sloe.biz (cool name!)

1lb sloes, 4oz sugar, 1 litre gin. Nice mixed units, there!

Does it matter what container you make your sloe gin in? I don't have a bottle or jar big enough but I have a HUUUUUUUGGGEE mixing bowl I could put it in and cover with cling film. WOuld that be ok?

I'm not sure Lisa, perhaps someone else could say, but I think the container is supposed to have an airtight stopper. (?)

I intend using a cleaned, large, plastic milk container - hope that's ok..I have a pound and a half of sloes and wondered, could I use soft demerara sugar.. ( how much ? ), and I have a 75cl bottle of gin - should I use it all ?

    thanks for any help.

I'd say no because the alcohol would evaporate and you'd have to uncover it every day to stir the sugar. Nellykims milk container idea is much better

I've used soft brown sugar before and it worked but it did have a denser?? flavour. LOL I don't know a better way to describe it, but I only done it the once. For 75cl I'd use 1 lb of sloes and 1/2 lb of sugar. Shake every day, taste after a month and add a bit more sugar if the gin still predominates.

No - its not too late until the birds have taken them all!!

In fact, they may even be better as they will be well frosted ;)
  • Late harvest sloe gin
    .....

  • No, its not too late; I'm still picking them for my gin. You'll know when its too late cos they'll start to shrivel. I usually pick a good few more than I need & freeze them in case next year's harvest is poor. Having said that, last year was a bumper harvest & this year only slightly down on that, but you never know!
