Speed Camera switch off sees fewer accidents

This is a slightly stupid argument. It seems those "pro safety" back up walking blindly into the road, and back up those sort of crossings.
Dear me.
No, I back up people driving at safe speeds near crossings?
You are just saying if cars don't see the crossing it is tough??
Some may be in not ideal places (mainly because they need some kind of crossing but their is no where ideal to put one)
But I have never walked out blind but I would say I have had 100's of occations where drivers have not stopped.
In most cases it is the driver not being aware not the pedestrian, the pedestrian has a lot more to lose than the driver.
You have a child GD but yet you come across as someone who thinks it is pedestrians not drivers that cause all the accidents.
Children will walk out GD a perhaps you need to start changing you attitude to pedestrians.
I am not really pro safety I am just someone who thinks their are to many idiots on the roads.0 -

Oh give over.
How can you seriously discuss when this is the nonsense you have to come out with to disprove the points raised.
Everyone so far has ignored the post detailing the pedestrians responsibility. Doesn't suit.0 -

No they have not, I stop at a crossing before stepping off.
But there have been 100's of times cars have just driven over the crossing while I have waited.
So GD how may times have you stepped out and not looked?
How many times have you waited at a crossing and people have just drive over ignoring you?
Add children and the old and even drunk (like you brought up) and you can see where it goes wrong.
I don't need you to be honest it is a fact a lot of people do not stop at crossing far more than that people who step out blind.
Some drivers do it infront of other cars !!!!!! (I am a driver GD) some drivers have little respect for things smaller than them. Pedestrians tend to be fairly wary as it is literally life and death.
There are a lot of drivers out there at the moment GD who think people should avoid hitting them not the other way round.0 -
I think the moral of this story is that it takes common sense and responsibility on both sides for these crossings to work.
It is really up to pedestrians to look after them selves first before casting blame at other parties. If they follow the green cross code and wait for the cars to stop at the crossing before stepping off they will virtually guarantee their chances of making it across safely.
Why is it that some people expect everyone else to look after their well being? Take responsibility for yourself first. Then worry about what others are doing wrong. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

That does hold some faith in drivers stopping rather than waiting for a break in the traffic. Cars have to stop and this is part of the problem, you seem to think people have to wait until some kind driver decides to stop.
Drivers have to take equal responsibility, it is mainly the young and the old that get injured in such accidents. But perhaps as some think if they step off and a car does not stop it is their own fault.
I get the feeling some on here think it is find for them to carry on as long as a person does not step out.
PS I drive a car to work everyday, I just see how bad some drive and have been standing on zebra crossing before when people have not stopped or have even stopped on top of them or just started driving again when being half way over the road.
There are far more bad drivers than bad pedestrians.0 -
More speed cameras, people complain. Less speed camears, people complain.
There's far more to bad driving than speed alone.
Personal view... speed cameras should not be outside residential areas. Tailgating on motorways is far worse than driving a little too fast.0 -

They DO!!!
It's frankly stupid not to wait until the cars have stopped.18: At all crossings. When using any type of crossing you should- always check that the traffic has stopped before you start to cross or push a pram onto a crossing
Yes there are some drivers who will drive on through, but 99% will stop.
The whole point of WAITING is that one driver who WONT stop and WILL knock you down. Cuss him or her, instead of being knocked flying by him or her, it's far easier, and safer for your health.
Jeez. It's like a lesson in the downright blimmin obvious.0 -

Not true Graham, if the driver has slowed down dramatically and waved me across, I think it reasonable to commence crossing. In addition, if the car is in the far distance, I'm happy to cross.0 -

That's a chance YOU take. At that point you have taken responsibility for what happens next. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

Yes. Although TBH, if the driver then decides to put his foot to the metal and the pedal to the floor - I would expect them to be at least slightly responsible.0
