On a seperate note, we also need something like the green cross code back.

I don't like to think of myself as an old fuddy duddy, but SOME kids really seem to believe the road is their right of way, especially at pedestrian crossings. We appear to be getting more and more of these crossings, which are fine, if everyone knows how to use them. I.e. it's not a right for the pedestrian to just step right out and walk....especially when they are not even walking, but instead being chased by their mate or are on one of those little scooter things and just shoot out.

Do they still do these kind of things in school? I know I never did, but did to the cycle thing.

And does anyone else get kids with power going to their heads hanging round these crossings? Normally young teens, who pretend to want to cross, get you to stop, then slink back laughing?

Not sure this is done anymore as most kids don't walk to school - the darlings get delivered by their over protective parents. Our next door neighbour does this and the school is half a mile away!!

Kids have little exposure to traffic other than through a side window!

Just the usual Tories populist claptrap.

Don't forget that it was them who started the proliferation of speed cameras, invented the fuel duty escalator that New Labour scrapped and ratcheted up Company Car tax

Motorists have been given an easy ride under New Labour.

If they don't do anythign anymore, that seriously needs looking at.

It's blindingly obvious accidents will go up if kids think they are invisible (as we all did as kids) and don't even know the right way to use the road and crossings etc.

Having said that, I want to run down the lollypop man I encounter on the way to work. He's worse than the kids. Stands bolt upright, head in the air, and simply walks into the road regardless wth his hand out straight out at you, never says thanks and half the time forces you to break pretty hard, as he shows no intention of wanting to use the crossing, and then just walks straight onto it!

Er, pedestrians do have right of way on zebra crossings, you should treat each one as if you were crossing a main road in your car, only proceed if you can see the way is clear.

Cyclists and scooter riders don't have the right of way, though.

But they all have Advanced driver training. If you want to raise the limit for those with a regularly repeated Advanced licence test, go right ahead.

I don't have an issue with that.

I've thanked your "driving to speed of conditions" Graham. That makes sense. The speed limit is a top limit, it doesn't mean we all have to travel at that speed of course, regardless of conditions. But then we all know that, it's why we go on a driving test. I agree that not all limits on every road in the country make sense, and that not all speed cameras are perfectly positioned. I also agree that there are many bad drivers who do not break the speed limit, and many good drivers who can safely exceed the limit in the right conditions.

Oh and I apologise for the moron comment, it was a bit unfair. Less so the small penis, but we'll leave that.

    However.

We have limits, and cameras in order to try to lessen the impact of the bad drivers, then dangerous drives, the thoughtless drivers. It's not fair that us perfectly good drivers in our MOT'd and insured cars should be penalised, but that's how society works. A general rule to try to fit all without restricting our freedoms too much.

I do thoroughly recommend taking foot off the accelerator and relaxing. It makes little difference to destination time, but makes life a lot easier than being in the fast lane competition. And a big plus is I don't need to worry about cameras - hidden or not. Much less stressful.

Errr, they don't have right of way to simply run on to it. The lollypop man doesnt have right of way to simply walk between travelling cars when he wishes. If everyone stopped for him the cars would never move, as he's always standing at the crossing, just back a little. But he can see the kids before we can. When he does, he simply walks in to the road, instead of walking up to the edge of the road and waiting, therefore showing intent to use the crossing.

It's quite obvious if someone is at a zebra crossing that they want to cross, and you stop. But you can't keep stopping at crossings just incase the person near it may want to use it, but instead walks past. Therefore, you stop when someone shows intent to use it.

There are also many crossings where you simply cannot see the person until they are on top of the crossing itself. 2 steps is all it take for them to walk from the allyway we cannot see, to the edge of the crossing. Some simply walk on to the crossing. There is literally the time it takes for a person to take 2 steps out of the allyway and on to the crossing to see them and stop.

That person intent on using it, should wait for you to come to a stop.

Road deaths dropped by 12% in 2009 compared with 2008. So, compared with national statistics, road deaths in Swindon seem to have fallen less than the rest of the country. A comparative rise.

    Edit:

    http://www.rospa.com/news/releases/detail/default.aspx?id=864

The original post was talking about all accidents, not just road deaths. In fact while we're misusing statistics, the original post mentioned road deaths had halved in Swindon, so by your logic removing cameras had an extra 38% effectiveness in reducing road deaths...

Thats another point, zebra crossings are not safe as often it's not clear the person is going to use them. In Norwich there is a zebra crossing in the City centre and you can't see those about to cross as it's from an alleyway - many near misses here as people dart out.

Zebra crossings grey the intention, wereas traffic lights make peoples intentions clear.
