    I've got a 1997 TDi Golf.
I get around 45mpg driving it with near zero consideration for fuel economy.
I've done nothing to the engine apart from oil changes. It was on 140K when I bought it, 175K now.
I replaced the clutch and sorted the suspension and brakes. Pot luck on a car that cost me £450.

I save around £100 per month in fuel costs.

So in the next 30k miles, if the O/P plans to buy the golf hes looking at might expect to pay out for a clutch (£300), brakes (£200), and suspension (£200) but save, in his case, £4 a week?

Whatever really. I paid out because I wanted a car with new suspension; most wouldn't have bothered. Brakes and clutch are consumables.

I paid £450 then spent around £1K on the car (not all of it necessary) , meaning it cost me £1450 and saved me £100 a month in fuel costs. So within a year I was only £250 down.
    Happy chappy

    I owned a "modern" diesel.

It sounded like a tractor, drove like one, alright it did 50mpg and wasn't slow, but hell it was vile to actually drive.

    Andy

Which is exactly why we don't all drive the same car, down to values and choices, not right or wrong :T:T:T

  • So, i got a vw tdi 90

in my first fill up i put £20 in, rags the tits off it and got 140ish miles. second fill up i put in £20, drove properly and got 180 miles which works out about 46mpg.... but in real terms the i've already saved/not spent about £5, i normally full up twice a week, so a tidy annual saving/non spend of about £500
