Petrol vs Diesel

What is your budget, and what cars have you got in mind?
i'm lookin at golfs. about £2000, seen a few. not got a clue what all the letters mean tho! lolIt's best to search the net for models of cars suitable to run on veg oil. If you try it in most modern cars it will kill the pump and injectors etc, basically all the expensive to replace stuff.
i dont think i'll be moving to veggie oil just yet

If you find a 02/03 golf diesel for £2k, will you let me know?
The only one you'll find at that age will be knackered and have galactic mileage on it. You may get an 00/01 for the money you've specified.
This looks well, and sensible mileage:

30miles a day, even at 365 days a year is less than 11,000 miles per year.
I always thought diesel became cheaper at around15k miles per year. If that's true, you'd be cheaper with petrol.

The more miles you do annually the larger the gap between running a petrol and diesel car.
Diesel cars use less fuel so you save there but they're often more expensive than petrol equivalent, more to service, and for older cars, may be more expensive to tax.
That's why the higher mileage is better because you're saving more on fuel.
You don't do a large mileage so I was suggesting that a diesel may not be the cheaper option.

An interesting read
I drive a N reg, battered old Ford Fiesta and I'm getting approx 140 miles out of £20 (currently £1.1399 a litre)
I wonder what I'd get with the diesel0 -
It obviously depends. I bought a diesel as I do 35miles a day on weekdays minimum, plus weekday stuff all but 4 miles on motorways, so it made sens when there was no price difference.0

I bought my first diesel back in March, more out of curiosity than anything. It's an R reg 406 1.9TD. I then started doing some research into running it on veg oil, which it has been quite happily for a couple of months, without any modding, basically none is needed on this model. I've been pleasantly surprised by it's performance for an old nearly 150k diesel!
My last batch of 'fuel' was on rollback at Asda, 66p/litre! :j0 -

The 1.9 XUD engine will have no trouble running on veg, but the newer HDi engines, like mine will be killed if you ran it on veg. That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -

Roughly based on my 2ltr HDi, at £1.15 a litre, and 45mpg average, you'd get 172 miles for your £20.
