i would go for the mx5 i have had 2 of them One which was an import which was great until it had to be mot and the emmisions were not right and ended up with a huge bill as something had to be changed to make it correct so if you buy an import make sure its had at least one mot in the uk to avoid this it may have been that mine was very souped up But something to be aware of but it was a lot of fun to drive

also have leased a new 07 plate mazda mx5 for 18 months which is was great with a big boot plenty of space ect and comfortable to drive

I would avoid the newish version of the mr2 ( mark3 i think) there is no boot and i do mean no boot something i did not think of when i bought one a several years ago its a fun car to drive but very very small inside and there is no boot whatsoever unless you count to litle luggage storage shelf behind the seats

if you go up a bit with your budget you might get an audi tt which has a good size boot as well and much more like driving a saloon type of car rather than a sports car as it bigger but really nice and spacious

never had an mgf but from what i know they are not nowhere as good as the mx5

Have you considered a late Mk2 MR2? Much more boot space than the Mk3 and a reliable car too, there are plenty of good examples out there to be had.

I've heard that MGFs also have pretty bad suspension struts which are rather short lived.

Otherwise another vote for the MX5, my Dad has one and it's been very reliable.

It never ceases to amaze me, the rubbish that people classify as a "sports car" these days........

I suppose this is a "sports car" too? :rotfl: :rotfl:

But a sports car doesn't have to be fast, such as an MGB, a sports car, not a fast one, lets not confuse the issue by talking about performance cars, or inadvised superminis with the roof chopped off.
An MX5 is a sports car through and through.

Why don't you impart your opinion of what a small two seater sports car is rather than just posting childish comments.

If a convertiable is not your thing a Toyota Celica is well worth considering. It would be well within budget, looks good, drives nicely and is very reliable.

Granted it's FWD, but everything else about the Gen7 190 is sporty, once you change the brakes. Mine handled like a go-kart!

    if you're spending £6k i would say you can do better than a Mark 2 MR2, and Celica's aren't 2 seaters.

Mazda MX5 - like everyone else this car is the first in my mind, the 1.6's can be sluggish though so maybe look at one of the larger 1.8 engines, even if it only means a more relaxing drive such as getting up to motorway speeds.
Honda S2000 - 35mpg but still very fast 0-60 ~ 5 or 6 seconds, also chain driven so no expensive cambelt services. Bulletproof Honda reliability and some have hard tops.
Nissan 350Z - nowadays you can find them just about in the £6k price range, apparently the large engine is french but still strong.
Toyota MR2 Mk3 - probably classed as a lower level of car than the S2000 or 350Z and can come with hardtop.

In my opinion it would come down to those 4. I have owned a Honda Civic hatchback and a Mazda RX7 twin turbo and out of these would probably go for the S2000, 350Z would be my second choice. I think the Japanese manufacturers definately rule this part of the market. The Lotus Elise is a nice car but depending on what you're after the interior is very minimal i.e theres nothing to it so maybe it isn't ideal as a daily driver for some people?
