Another MX-5. Don't own one but its on my "buy list"

I used to think MX5s were hairdressers' cars - what an idiot I was!
My wife had one when she was in the USA and it did around 170,000 miles before wearing out. I bought her (a pretty old) one over here and I've fallen in love with it. They're solid as bricks, easy to repair and the bits are plentiful and not very expensive (try MX5 parts).
I've had a lot of cars over the years (some of them quite good ones) the MX5 rates as one of the best.0 -
MX5, excellent car with great handling, so gets my vote, although if you are a little speed-queen, go for the S2000, best car I have ever owned by a long way, and Ive had a few!“Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?”

as others have said the obvious one is the MX5 but at £6k you are on the bottom edge of Elise & Boxster country if you fancy something a bit different0

Another vote for the MX5. I use mine every day and also take it on the track - takes it all in it's stride and drives like a dream. It's easy to embarrass far faster cars on the track. The parts and servicing are also dirt cheap.0

Thanks for replies, its funny but my Dad also suggested the MX5 and thats after being a fan of MG's all his life ! I thought about a classic MG BGT but think the repairs / parts would be too expensive, plus I do want a bit of comfort.
Not too sure about a soft top mainly due to security etc, plus I dont have a garage. Are soft tops okay in winter ?
Any models with a hard top you can recommend ?
Will just have to go out and drive a few different models and then do my research.
Thanks again0 -

Sorry but I don't understand this bit ?? Whats a tin-worm ?!!0 -
Almost any sports car can be fitted with a hard top.
There are several hard top cars to choose from like VW EOS, Peugeot 207cc. These are not "real" sports cars but may suit your requirements better?
Modern soft tops are a lot better than the your dad's MGB and can be used as practical year round, everyday transport. Maintenance should be no more than an equivalent tin top.
If you are worried about security, it may be sensible to avoid anything sporty which will attract more attention than a small saloon."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

MX5 is the obvious choice, hartops are available as well.
Avoid the MGF like the plague, however there are other options not yet mentioned depending on what you class as sporty.
There is the Ka roadster, in your price range there are also convertable astras etc. Do you use the car for shopping etc? Things could be a tight squeeze as these are best as second vehicles!!0 -
You can buy hard-tops for MX5's.Make sure you get one with it on already though as they are expensive options.
Tin worm is just a nice way of saying rust.0
