MX5 would be the natural choice, but the 1.8 over the 1.6 which is a tad gutless.

Personally I would go for an S2000 which you should be able to pick up for your budget, or a 350Z like my wifes, which if you could get if you increased your budget a tad.

Either way do not get a rover, they are made of pig iron and monkey metal, you would be better off burning large wedges of £10 notes. Also watch out for roundabouts in wet weather!!!!

Another vote for a MX5 just sold mine solid as a rock very reliable don't go near an MG bound to end in tears.

Managed 2 weeks camping and driving in the highlands and islands in mine <th_NewPicture.jpggreat times.

Check out http://www.mx5oc.co.uk/ for lots of info.

You should be able to get a late low milage Mk 2.5 or an older Mk3 model (the current shape is Mk 3.5).

Comfort is a matter of opinion, and what you are used to. Compared with a 1972 Morgan its a world of luxury.

You don't seem to want more power but the Honda S2000 is a more serious car.

Hi there, your photobucket link leads to all your photos. There's a way to make the link show just the intended photo and deny access to the rest of your folders/photos. Unfortunately, I cannot remember how, but google it and you should get the info.

    Thanks for all replies.

Yes the MX5 looks fab but for my 6k I can only get a 2001 model !

So have been looking at MGF TF's. Many more around and for 6k I can get a 2005 model. Plus they look just as snazzy !

What is the major downside of MGF's ? Many replies have knocked MG's, can I ask why ?

I know Japanese makes are more reliable ( having had a fab Honda HRV for the last four years! )

Wish I had got any where near 6k, sold my 02 plate 1.8 with 92,000 miles for £2.5k about a month ago.

Don't be put off by higher mileage (as long as it's reflected in the price) they are bullet proof.

Are the hard top versions liveable (not the new hard top versions) with as the car would have to be parked in the street
  • Autotrader kicks up plenty of 2003 and 2004 MX5s around the £6k mark
  • toyota mr2! toyota10.jpg or renault megane they have hardtop not two seater though. lotus elise. something sporty with power i would go for a subaru WRX, subaru legacy sport, ford focus rs mk1 or a ST170. something fun would a VW polo GTI.

No-one has mentioned a Celica yet, you'd probably want the 190 version, but if you're not bothered about speed (or revving your car to 8000rpm) just go for the 140bhp version instead. If you don't like revving cars forget the S2000 as well. Stick Honda Integra and Prelude in that list too.
Otherwise the above suggestions about cover it. I think you can afford - Hyundai Coupe (1.6 for non-speed-freaks), MX5, RX8, MR2, BMW 3-series Coupe or Cabriolet, Daihatsu Copen, MGTF, Ford Puma (1.7)...

I also travel from Essex to York several times a year so need something that will be ok on motorways
I would also have voted for the MX-5 (I love mine and find it more fun to drive than either my BMW M5 or Porsche 911), but I do have to say that it is NOT the best car for motorway travel. It is quite noisy at 70mph+ and visibility is not the greatest with either the soft or hard top up (especially the C pillar).

I normally set my satnav to "shortest" or "avoid motorways" and travel on A and B roads, where the MX-5 is in its element.

Do join the MX-5 Owners' Club if you get one - a very friendly bunch of people.
