Would I be making a huge mistake by moving to Hastings?

Broadstairs is lovely. Better than Hastings. Has shops, sea and a 'quality' feel. Doctors and hospitals too. Train line okay but need to change in Canterbury for London.
Canterbury is great too.0 -
Thanks to everyone who's posted recently!
Pingu, I agree that Broadstairs is lovely, but the reasons I was thinking of Hastings (which I'm now thinking better of!) were the architecture of the Old Town and the historical connections that have particular relevance for me.
I'm now thinking of places near, but not actually in Hastings. I'd still like to be able to go there sometimes for shopping and to see the friends I've made there this year.
2225, I remember that story, but although it was the train TO Hastings, the offenders weren't actually from Hastings, it was just on the route.
Jolaaled, thanks for the link.
Jowo, as I've already said, I know there are undesirables everywhere! I don't personally think (as you said some people do) that anyone who's working class is a chav! They're obviously not!
And as I also said before, in my original post, I was using "chav" as a catch-all term. Although I can hardly see myself chumming up with someone in a baseball cap and tracksuit, what I actually want to avoid is a preponderance of antisocial/criminal types.
I'd love to live in a remote croft in the Highlands to be honest, but I have to get into London at intervals.0 -

That's funny! People in London ARE rude (generalising of course, as there are lots of nice people here too, but at times it seems like everyone around you has absolutely no social skills, pushing in front of older people onto the bus, yelling into their mobiles, not saying thankyou to the person serving them in shops etc)
Pimlico is by the river, it's got lots of lovely old houses so it LOOKS nice, but I've seen some really bad behaviour there too!
But I know what you mean. When I was staying in Devon, I was embarrased to tell people I was from London (though as it turned out, almost everyone I met had lived there at some point) They all felt really sorry for me having to go back there!0 -

If any one lives in Hastings, or knows it really well, what do you think? I would definitely only move to the Old Town area, and not venture into the chavvy new bit too much, just to go to M&S or whatever. I want to escape chavs and antisocial types - I live in Camden at present, which is dreadful, so it surely can't be as bad as that. People are so rude here, it's incredibly depressing!
I want to move somewhere where I can afford a house, no more flats for me!
I've been there several times in the past few months, and stayed there too - I'm undecided. I'm checking out Fairlight and Winchelsea (which I know slightly) in the next couple of days, but although I'd MUCH rather live somewhere quieter, I don't have a car, and do need to have access to a doctor/ hospital.
Its taken me ages (I've had time, because I couldn't move for various reasons) to narrow it down to two locations. The other is Glastonbury incidentally...
I know a lot of people are less than impressed by Hastings, but I'd like to hear from people who are speaking from personal experience!

Thanks Torchboy! I wouldn't actually have to find work in that area, but I know there is high unemployment there.0
