Would I be making a huge mistake by moving to Hastings?

Out of curiosity, how has a 23 year old been able to afford buying a flat in Camden?

I bought it when I was 18 actually. I inherited some money, and I wanted to buy in an area where I could buy a flat outright without needing a mortgage. In hindsight, I should have bought 10 minutes up the road in Hampstead and got a mortgage, it's very pleasant there!

Ah I see. I was wondering as Camden is fairly pricey, for some reason. Because its "trendy", probably.

Yes, it's trendy, but it's full of dodgy people! There's an awful lot of crime and antisocial behaviour here, I'm sick of it!

Tanja, why would you say that about Glastonbury, do tell!
The reason I narrowed it down to those two, is; Glastonbury, I love the spiritual aspects of the place and it's surrounded by nice countryside. Hastings, because I love the architecture of the Old Town, the history of the place, and the sea air is lovely.
Also, they're both places where detached houses are affordable!

I agree about the nice countryside around it, but I find the centre of Glastonbury very disjointed and terribly depressing! There's also no lack of chavs on top of the usual alternative types! I am neither, so maybe that's why it doesn't appeal.
If you like the Somerset area I wouldn't discount places like Wells and Taunton. Much nicer than Glasto, but still great access to nearby countryside.
  • Dan, I do realise that, but some places are a bit better than others!

Tanja, I know about the dodgy types in Glastonbury too, especially the drinkers round the market cross and outside the church. I figure, as Dan pointed out, no-where will be perfect!
Wells IS nice (and I'd go there quite a lot for shopping if I did move to Glastonbury) but it's too busy for me, I want somewhere as quiet as possible! I'd love to live somewhere really remote, but it's not practical for me at the moment.
I've never been to Taunton, but I know it's a fairly large place. In Glastonbury, it's the Tor, the Chalice Well and the Abbey that appeal to me, and they're specific to Glastonbury!
The shops in Glastonbury ARE mostly useless for residents. You don't need to buy Tarot cards every week after all!

Do you live in Camden itself, or the borough? We're in LB Camden, but south of King's Cross, we love it.

You are picking some really odd places. What's your budget? And criteria? And what do you want from a house? What do you need access to? Maybe people can be specific and trawl through Rightmove getting specifics as examples.

I quite like Hastings, if you pick the right part. There are some lovely properties off of Filsham Road, and tucked away in the Old Town. Avoid the town, and most of Blacklands. Bulverhythe is quite quiet, as is Ore. It depends where you're contemplating on working and what your budget is (sorry I only skimmed your post.. short of time!)
