Would I be making a huge mistake by moving to Hastings?

I live between Tunbridge wells and Hastings and know the area extremley well. Chavs are everywhere, and actually on the whole, I find the people of hastings more friendly and polite than those of Tunbridge wells, you do have to pick the right area in Both of those towns though. There are some lovely villages on the train line, have you considered that?
What sort of house, are you after, whats your budget and how much do you have to spend, what about work?
@ Dan totally disagree Rye and Camber really has its fair share of Chavs and in camber they are full of them in the campsites in the summer.Pawpurrs x0 -
Forgot to add, if you don't mind being "just outside" Hastings, then your options explode. If you like quiet, consider Westfield. If you like historic quaint towns, try Battle. etc. etc.Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

I used to live in Hastings about 14 years ago but found the cost of living high and the wages low . I don't know what it's like now - I've only been back once, about 6 years ago, and the town centre had completely changed (ie the cricket ground had been replaced by a shopping centre). I found the place was full of druggy alcoholics sitting on the beach (my ex being one of them!!) but on the whole I did like the area. We lived in rented accommodation in St Leonards mostly. I loved the old Victorian buildings with high ceilings and original features though they were a pain to heat in the winter.0

Both of my brothers moved to Hastings in the late '80s as it was much cheaper than our locality which was Tonbridge. They both seem to like it, one lives off of Harold Road near the Old Town, the other nearer the top on Park Crescent. Plenty going on and quite arty. Interesting that you've chosen Hastings and not Brighton, which is most people's choice of South Coast dream home town.0

Tanja, I know about the dodgy types in Glastonbury too, especially the drinkers round the market cross and outside the church. I figure, as Dan pointed out, no-where will be perfect!
Wells IS nice (and I'd go there quite a lot for shopping if I did move to Glastonbury) but it's too busy for me, I want somewhere as quiet as possible! I'd love to live somewhere really remote, but it's not practical for me at the moment.
I've never been to Taunton, but I know it's a fairly large place. In Glastonbury, it's the Tor, the Chalice Well and the Abbey that appeal to me, and they're specific to Glastonbury!
The shops in Glastonbury ARE mostly useless for residents. You don't need to buy Tarot cards every week after all!
I was going to tell you about how useless Glastonbury shops are (although there is a lovely organic supermarket where Woolworths used to be), but it seems like you've done your homework
Glastonbury does have it's charms and there is a close knit community there. At the end of the day if you are contemplating moving to Glastonbury then you're probably right for the area as it's a very individual place.
I've no idea what you do for a living, but if you need to work, please be aware that there are hardly any decent jobs being advertised here at the moment (I live in Mendip too). So my advice to you would be, if you need to work then job-hunt at the same time as house-hunt.
Also, have you thought about places such as Sherborne, Castle Cary, Chew Magna or Wedmore? They are all definitely not chavvy (although I don't think anywhere in the UK is Chav-free) and have easy access to the countryside.
Good luck with your hunt.

I spent part of my childhood in Hastings and it was run down even then. It has a big reputation for drugs, asylum seekers and people who needed a lot of social help. I think it has been like that for a long time, it's because it's quite cheap and on the train line. Family friends who still live there say there's no work or only very low paid work. I know it's lovely to think of having a house rather than a flat, but I think peace of mind is the most important thing and this may make location more important than the size of the property. obs if you have kids you need the space. Brighton seems better but more expensive. Tun wells got good shops, you could get a 2 bed terrace for under £200 k? also like others have said there's battle. don't know about robertsbridge but that's on the same line. however i don't really understand what your criteria is, where do you need to commute to?0

I have never lived in Hastings, but went to visit some friends down there years ago, we've lost touch now though.
The one thing I can remember about it is a little cottage called "The Piece of Cheese Cottage", it was for sale when we were there, but now it seems to be rented out as a holiday home.
Look here http://thepieceofcheese.webs.com/
It's a quaint little building.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -
i loved the cheese house as a child!!! we used to go looking for it. i do remember the old town being quite charming and special. i also always wanted to go on the cable car but i never got to. I used to love the funfair on the beach and was terrified by the rolllercoaster which apparently isn't there any more. it was not really scary or fast at all but i think i once cried so much they had to stop it and let me off it.0

I can't why you find it hilarious that someone wishes for peace and quiet (unless you're one of the noisy neighbours I want to get away from, of course)0 -
