Would I be making a huge mistake by moving to Hastings?

The title says it really! I've been stuck in London for ages, wanting to move and will finally be able to put my flat on the market in the Autumn (if I can sell it, of course)
If any one lives in Hastings, or knows it really well, what do you think? I would definitely only move to the Old Town area, and not venture into the chavvy new bit too much, just to go to M&S or whatever. I want to escape chavs and antisocial types - I live in Camden at present, which is dreadful, so it surely can't be as bad as that. People are so rude here, it's incredibly depressing!
I want to move somewhere where I can afford a house, no more flats for me!
I've been there several times in the past few months, and stayed there too - I'm undecided. I'm checking out Fairlight and Winchelsea (which I know slightly) in the next couple of days, but although I'd MUCH rather live somewhere quieter, I don't have a car, and do need to have access to a doctor/ hospital.
Its taken me ages (I've had time, because I couldn't move for various reasons) to narrow it down to two locations. The other is Glastonbury incidentally...
I know a lot of people are less than impressed by Hastings, but I'd like to hear from people who are speaking from personal experience!

That's a really, really amusing post, pretending to be a stuck-up-idiot when we know you're actually a very tolerant and kind person...
Made me laugh! Thanks!!!

Gosh no, I'm a crashing snob! I dare say you would be too if you lived amongst the sort of people who dwell where I live at present.
I certainly don't think it's remarkable to loathe the kind of people who spit in the street, chuck litter on the ground and swear constantly, do you really think that's acceptable behaviour, artfullodger?
I'm 23, henpecked.0 -
Hastings is a sh1thole0
-
but you do have the nearby villages of Rye and Camber which are lovely, esp in the summer.0

Thankyou for replying Dan. Are you referring to Hastings as a whole, or just the new bit (I know that's not terribly salubrious) Have you ever lived there?
I know Rye very well, plenty of chavs there too, I'm afraid and not so many useful shops. It's certainly not what it was in EF Benson's day (or even in the days of Monica Edwards and Malcolm Saville)0 -

No never lived there, I had a caravan at camber sands a few years back and loved it. I like Rye, didnt notice many chavs but your defination may be different to mine. You are right of course, not many high street brand shops in Rye but thats what I like about it. Hastings has the shops, has the chavs but it's not really all that bad, just the usual British seaside town I guess.0 -

Out of curiosity, how has a 23 year old been able to afford buying a flat in Camden?0
-
I have noticed them myself in Rye, but know people who live there, and have been told about a LOT of antisocial behaviour there.
Tanja, why would you say that about Glastonbury, do tell!
The reason I narrowed it down to those two, is; Glastonbury, I love the spiritual aspects of the place and it's surrounded by nice countryside. Hastings, because I love the architecture of the Old Town, the history of the place, and the sea air is lovely.
Also, they're both places where detached houses are affordable!0
