I have made my own stuff in the past. I tend to buy the detergent these days as it is a bit of a faff about to make it and get the stuff but i have started making my own softener again.
Softener is just white vinegar, bicarb of soda, water and some essential oil if you want it. Some people even just use the vinegar by itself, make sure its the white vinegar. The smell evaporates as the clothes dry so you dont end up smelling like a chippy!.
I have a detergent 'recipe' somewhere but the only prob is getting Borax, i dont know where you'll get that here in the UK. I used to make it when i lived in the States and it was easy enough to pick up there. If you can, help others; if you cannot do that, at least do not harm them~Dalai LamaHow people treat you is their karma; how you react is yours~Wayne DyerLet none find fault in others. BL I was just about to ask that!
It was the same with my window, I'd left the living room one open but it had a restricter, we needed one women with skinny arms to reach up and push the button on one side, then a bloke to pull the window open on that side, then she did the other side. Luckily I'm ground floor though so one of the blokes just needed a leg up to get in. So we didn't have to break anything, just my pride!Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
I like the idea of white vinegar and essential oils (pine for the bathroom, lavender for the bedding... lots of ideas!) but where do you get white vinegar? When I've looked in supermarkets I've got confused with them all, and the white ones always seem to be really expensive for small bottles.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

Hi all, just thought I'd throw my hat thought the door and say hello.
It's been a busy day, Herbs, Breaking and Entering, and Now we're going to put Lever Bros out of business:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Seriously I cant think of anywhere to get Borax from, I'll have a google though. How much would you need to make enough for say a months laundry?
Cheers all, handy.Mother Nature Don't Draw Straight lines, We are Broken Moulds in Life's Grand Design, We look a Mess but we're doing fine,

If I have it right white vinegar is what is known as non - brewed condiment. Basically Dilute Ascetic acid, which I used to use as a stop bath for developing photographs.
As there are not many people who develop films and photo's in this digital age I don't know how easy it would be to come by?
I think GeeBee is a Chemist?:D

ah right, I just thought it would be any of the many types of vinegar that's not brown, I assumed it was so it wouldn't stain.

Here's a link for Borax it looks reasonable for a 1KG amount

Off to look for white vinegar now. Maybe when I trim the lavender I could send out the clippings instead of putting them on the compost / bonfire?Mother Nature Don't Draw Straight lines, We are Broken Moulds in Life's Grand Design, We look a Mess but we're doing fine,

Ames, sorry i didnt see this before. The white vinegar is a bit pricier than the regular stuff but it still works out cheaper than shop bought softener. It was only when i read this post that i realised i forgot to mention the water to be added.
What you will need are equal quantities of (white) vinegar and bicarb and double of water. EG.... 1 pint vinegar, 1 pint of bicarb, mix in a large container, this will fizz up. When it stops fizzing, add 2 pints of hot water and your oils. Give it a good shake, and always again before you usae it. Use about the same amount as you would the ordinary (not concentrate) stuff.
