    NSD AUGUST 6/8 :j
  • Its a slow Saturday night, I wish there was a pub that wasn't a Taxi ride or a four mile stumble over the fields from Hooray Hall. (the 4 mile stumble applies to daylight as well.

This afternoon the cowman came with a cattle transporter to move the bullucks to a fresh pasture. His son a Lanky youth of 16 wearing an Aussie Stockmans Hat. (we have a lot of Cowboys down here) was struggling to get the first cows up the ramp.

Jump up inside and make like a blade of grass said the cowman. The lad did as he was told. After a minute of inactivity he shouted out of back of the transporter, What sound does a blade of grass make dad?

The cowman turned to me and said when I get home I'm going to insist on a dna test, cos he cant be one of mine:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

The air around Hooray Hall smells a lot better tonight:T

    Cheers all, handy.

Ah well, doesn't look like I can use it for cooking then. I'll just pick it and dry it and put it in with my clothes.

There's a couple of lavender farms, there's one near castle howard, and another called (I think) Wold's Way Lavender, I pass the turn off to it on the A64 when I'm going to Scarborough.

ETA: This is it, although I've never noticed yellow flowers on it, http://www.gardenzone.info/herbs/cottonlavender.php

I've got cotton lavender in my garden, Ames, you can't cook with it but it does make great pot pourri or in muslin bags to put in with your clothes. Cut it back after it should finish flowering (around now), but not too hard otherwise it might die if we get another hard winter. Then cut it back again in the spring and it might even flower - it flowers on new growth and it looks pretty when it flowers.

    Good luck

That's gardeners question time done for today

Now I'm confused! A few websites said it was fine for cooking with?

Probably best not to risk it, I'm not a good cook to start with!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Ooh, that's strange, I was always told you can't cook with it, something to do with the oil in the leaves, puzzled now..... (and wondering what I've been missing all these years)...

Might ask one of my friends, she's much better with herbs than I am - or Geebee will probably know

Sorry, Ames, didn't mean to confuse you

NP, I've just posted on the greenfingered board. Hopefully they can clear it up!

I was a bit confused, one site said that you can get a rash from the crushed leaves, then another said it's good for cuts, and a few said you can eat it.

That would be good to know, I always thought it was more a herbal type lavender than an edible one - could you let me know what they say, I'd be interested to find out

Tell you what, If I Try a recipe with it tomorrow? if you don't hear from me tomorrow evening dont try it.:D

It's like when Lady H told me Husband No 1 died from eating poison mushrooms and No 2 from a fractured skull. I said that's tragic how did it happen? she said he wouldn't eat the flippin mushrooms!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Sorry for being flippant I would give it a try, only use a small amount first. I was interested that the web site said it could be used in herbal tobacco. Be careful its surprising the number of ordinary garden plants that are hallucinagenic. Some I know and some I don't but that info is best not posted.

I remember working with the Peak District Mountain Rescue. There were certain times of the year when we would find folks wandering about (mainly freshers from Sheffield uni) after trying Magic Mushrooms. We pulled one guy from a burning tent one night, after dumping him in the river to put him out he complained we had made the fire flies vanish Man!!:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

    Cheers all, handy.
