Electric cars are simply non starter.
Especially if you live outside London.
These are just novelties for people money to burn. For day to day family use, they still don't make sense.
Of course, if they are available for less than £5k, have decent range on each charge, that might swing my mood
+1
EV's are at this stage for 'Early Adapters', ie, for people who want the technology either for technologyies sake OR for (misdirected or otherwise) environmental reasons not the money saving aspect.
It will be years before its more cost effective to use an EV.0 -

Actually I thought an electric car was basically two starters, both of which are attached to the front wheels?
Seriously though, I agree with your point. My 16 mile commute goes across the tops of two valleys and instead of the advertised 60mpg from my Mondeo, I'm lucky to get 30 so god knows what range an electric car would fall to.0 -
The Toyota Prius has been used as a taxi throughout the world for years now.
Many have done over 300Kmiles on same battery and still in service.0 -

And that's supposed to be a recommendation?0 -

Is this really true 300K miles on the same battery?
When is the plug in prius coming out in the UK? Will it qualify for the 5K grant?0 -

There are about 6 Ecars out next year that will qualify for the grant.
Which one is the best, I would go for the Nissan Leaf for iner city driving or longer distance the plug in Prius.
The next few years ALL major car makes are bring out Ecars and prices of the batteries will come down.
Edit Actually 9 Ecars.
Nine models are covered; the first vehicles to qualify are the Mitsubishi iMiEV, the Mercedes-Benz smart fortwo ED and the Peugeot iON.
The discounts, known as the 'Plug-In Car Grant', will apply to six other cars as they join the scheme over the next few months.
They are: the Citroen CZero, available in early 2011, the Nissan Leaf and the Tata Vista EV.
Available from early 2012 will be the Toyota Prius Plug-in, the Vauxhall Ampera and the Chevrolet Volt.0 -
Ford Focus will be electric soon. I hope this 5grand grant wil still be around in a few years.0

The Prius is environmentally a terrible car“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
