5 grand grant off electric car Jan 2011

And that's great. But they shouldn't be state subsidised.
This forum is not about the morality of if EVs should be subsidised or not. Its about moneysaving.
So I am very keenly awaiting prices coming down on good EV`s.
I would not buy a new one and get 5K grant, but after a little while there will be bargains in the 2nd hand market.
I love the idea of a cheap little EV for a 2nd car just for running about in London.0 -

Until you have to pay £5,000-9,000 for a new battery...
You are talking about 10yrs or more. To me thats almost the life of the car these days.
After 10yrs or 100K miles all cars are on their last legs and could need lots of money spent.
Quick question after the 5grand grant comes in in Jan, will all Toyata Prius go down in price?
If new ones are suddenly 5K off then a 2yr old one 2nd hand value should go down about 5K?0 -

You're not reading the posts are you? The £5K is ALREADY off the price of the Leaf, which is estimated to have a retail price AFTER subsidy of £25K+. That wont impact Prius prices as its considerably higher than their list price (on which you can get discount)
There will be no mass adjustment of prices downwards.0 -

How is spending nigh on £25K on a car moneysaving? even at two years old you'd be likely to be spending £15K-18K on one of these on a dealers forecourt.0 -

Try reading the article I linked to, and try reading a bit about the batteries that will go in these cars. Here's a quote:
"Mitsubishi says its batteries will be guaranteed for 62,500 miles, but should work, at least partially, for up to 100,000 miles."
So depending on the mileage the car does, that 62,500 could come around in 3 years or so.
The batteries working partially for up to 100,000 miles means that it may only hold a charge sufficient to get you 20 miles before needing a recharge (which takes several hours).
You also have to bear in mind that any heating in the car will be electric, so the range of the car will drop off significantly in winter - the cold affects the ability of the battery to hold a charge, and you'll be running a lot more electrics.
I'm not sure why you think the Prius will go down in price as that is a hybrid rather than an electric car.0 -
just thought i'd plug the Smart electric car (Smart ED) here, i'm seriously considering getting one when they are released. fun to drive, unbeliveably quiet, a full charge (£1-2) will do 80 miles, so would be excellent for going shopping, nipping about, etc.
Test drove one at Mercedes benz world at brooklands in the summer at a Smart festival, very impressed i was, apart from the fact theres no clutch or gear change!:rotfl:0 -
I'm with Shimrod on this
EV's are just not worth it now. the hassle involved puts me off completely. Plus i like the power and performance of internal combustion engines
Christ we all moan about house hold electric fuel bills but if you've got one of these cars imagine the juice it's swallowing to charge itself.
Then there's the batteries lasting 60k.. Thats pathetic.. Yeah it's good in terms of lastability for a battery but not for a car.. I could easily munch through 60k in a year..
Nah i'll stick with Petrol engines.. I don't care about global warming and i'll be dead before it kicks in. Plus it's been happening for thousands of years anyway. Screw electric cars and screw the governmentIf Adam and Eve were created first
.Does that mean we are all inbred0 -

Really.. sold my last car at 10 years old and 186,000 miles still going strong (wish I hadn't as brand new car was rubbish and brought back). Wife's car is 12 years old, 109,000 miles and far far from being on it's last legs..
Most cars are more than capable of latest for 15+years and 150,000 miles, trouble is that as they age people don't want to service them or generally look after then.. I lost count of the number of good cars being scraped under the scrappage schemce.... Be green - don't have a laugh, it was more about keeping new car sales up..0 -
Electric cars are simply non starter.
Especially if you live outside London.
These are just novelties for people money to burn. For day to day family use, they still don't make sense.
Of course, if they are available for less than £5k, have decent range on each charge, that might swing my mood
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0
