5 grand grant off electric car Jan 2011

I doubt it, if there's a £5k grant to be had, MFR's will keep the prices high, even if it means stacking the price up by £5k on top of what would be profitable for them.
The UK is a small market for Nissan, Honda and Toyota etc. We can see the price in Japan and the USA, and we will get 5grand off that in the UK. They cant just put 5K on the UK price.
The plug in Prius will be out next year and that does qualify at the moment you can buy a prius for less than 20K, so we should be able to get 5K off that.0 -
What I find so hard to understand, is all these current offers and deals are really only open to the wealthy, as lets me honest, who has 25K sitting around to buy a electric car that will devalue faster than the saving of petrol??!
What about a grant for the old aged? Disabled? and so on, oh wait, there not rich unlike the government who like to look after themselves!0 -
The idea is to make the UK less dependant on oil.
This next decade we will see many more electric cars on UK roads this can only be a good thing for rich and poor alike.0 -
The biggest problem is that modern diesels are so efficient.
There isn't an electric car that can match some of the diesels for economical motorway driving. In cities electric cars work well, but on open roads they can't yet match them.0 -

Diesels are not that great. So what if you can get 70MPG the cost of fuel is rising. 20% vat next Jan will push it up even more.
Electric cars cost about 2p per mile for electricity.
The Leaf will be about 23K after the grant.

I am hoping that next year we will see cheaper electric cars that qualify for the grant.0 -
Reva have announced specifications and prices for the NXR and NXG cars.
The NXR is the four seat, three door hatchback. Prices will vary slightly between countries but the indicative pricing looks very keen indeed.
There are two main versions of the NXR - a lead acid battery car that has similar performance and range to the existing G-Wiz i, and a lithium-ion battery car with significantly improved performance and range. Both cars will be available in a choice of trim levels, with the top of the range car coming with sat nav, optional solar roof and lots of toys to play with.
The base model - the NXR City - has been announced with a Euro price of €9,999 - that's approximately £8,300, whilst the lithium-powered NXR Inter City has a price of €14,999 - approximately £12,450.
That makes a base model Reva similar in price to the base model Ford Ka.
The NXG is more expensive - a halo sportscar. The announced price is €22,999 (around £19,000) with availability during 2011.
I am seriously thinking about the base model, if you can get it new for about £3300 with the £5K grant or even the lithium-powered NXR Inter City with sola pannels on the roof for £7.5 grand after the grant.
Anyone got some good pictures and info about the NXR and NXG?

@RDB - Good post but wishful thinking, there's no way the govt will give £5k grant on a car that is £8.3k. The max £5k grant will probably apply to cars that are £25k+ and then a sliding scale.0

The rule is that they will pay 25% of the cars cost, up to £5k.
So for a £8.3k car, they would only pay just over £2k towards it.0 -

This may then works out better than the scrappage scheme, @ £6.2k it would be affordable for us working class people. The car will then needs to be reliable. Reva is an indian company, without being prejudice, somehow I doubt it would be up there for reliability.0 -
What about the new BMW Megacity?
This should be able to qualify for the 5 grand grant, anyone got the release date?0
