In terms of the 'toads', I've done veggie sausages (we're a veggie household) as in Mr T's lincolnshire, I've done homemade nut roast mix 'sausages' (last month on my £50 challenge) and I've done onions - roasted in the pan like you would the sausages, then the mix poured on top and towards the end of cooking, sprinkled a little cheese on top. The only suggestion I would make is that 'proper' sausages cut up make the dish easier to portion out, as the batter covers them up. If they're whole and move under the batter, someone will have all the toads and someone the hole! I have this dish on my menu planner to make on Saturday, but won't be able to post about it for a while - and I suspect not provide pics which is a shame, so if you can fill in the gaps Murrell, that would be brill - IF you think it is good enough that is.

Nuala Buala, I hope expectation is not running too high - I feel honour bound to deliver a fabulous dish now -eek!

Well you're off to a great start as I'm already drooling slightly at the thoughts of the nut roast sausages! What a great idea, I'd never have thought of it.:T
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Ooo Murrell, this is a bit OT but do you know if it's possible/how-to make soya yoghurt in a slow cooker? Is there a way to do it cheaply? All I can seem to find is those ultra-expensive fancy "yoghurt starters" but I know with cow's milk yoghurt I think you can do it from just a normal pot bought at the supermarket!

You can do it from a normal shop bought soya yogurt and use a flask. Its years since i've done it and I think it might be in the book I have out of the library. Don't have time to find details right now. Someone on the vegan thread might be able to help though.

    Hello everyone

I am very excited to have found this thread and will be looking at the website to get some inspiration with meal planning. We need to really cut our bills as our household income has dropped by several hundred a month since last year. I've also got down my debts of approx £3000 to £300 since last Aug which is great but we now need to go even further. We've been meal planning for the last 2 weeks which has stopped us wasting money and has been a good challenge as we both like cooking. I'm veggie, my husband is a mga-carnivore and DD is great and eats pretty much anything.

So nice to meet you all and I'll enjoy seeing how everyone is going along.

Hello and welcome, Gingerjar :) Any questions, we're all here and happy to help, even if we do go slightly manic at times (okay, that's prolly just me)

Okay, first batch of bread a partial success. Followed the recipe (Morphy Richards breadmaker) and it's very dark on the bottom but quite light on top (medium setting) - it tastes ok but it looks quite stodgy and feels quite heavy and also fell apart when I sliced it - the crusts fell off and the middle fell out! lol

I don't know if it's because I cut it straight away - needed it for superfast dinner lol. Also can't see us getting more than 10 slices out a loaf (2lb one) which doesn't seem a lot!

I'd have a go at the handmade ones but I feel like I need to use my breadmaker! lol. Also don't have any loaf tins to do one in the oven.

    Hmm.

Never cut the bread straight away - you'll end up with a mess :D I have recently retired my breadmaker, I'm afraid, as I find that baking a four loaf batch is far easier, and the bread a better quality and less waste than one made in a BM.

How about making a batch of bread rolls until you can budget for some silicone loaf tins ? I can dig out the Paul Merret recipe for the normal knead bread, that would lend itself well to rolls, I think - the no-knead recipe from the website is a bit too sloppy to shape into rolls very easily.
  • Are silicone tins the best to use for bread loafs? DO they need greasing?

I was given my BM about a year and a half ago and never used it.. I love the idea of all the work being done for me :D I'll see what it's like tomorrow and bake another loaf. Should I store it wrapped in something?

Yep, they're best, because they do not need greasing :)

I used to use my breadmaker a lot when I worked shifts as I quite simply wasn't in the house long enough to let it prove in peace ! So it's definitely got its uses - but if you have the time to do a batch once a week, then that is really the most frugal option !

I store mine in a cotton bag - wrapped in a cotton tea towel would be fine.

snowed I store my loaves in the paper bag the flour was in.

The paper absorbs a little bit of moisture and keeps the loaf a bit fresher
