We decided to treat ourselves a bit over Christmas to make up for being careful during the year.

Am working on goals for next year. The overall one will be to live simply and enjoy the abundance we have.

It's strange how your two comments seem to contradict but actually they don't.

Even though I'm a relatively new MFW I am trying hard to find the balance. Trying to treat yourself often enough for it to be a treat but without doing it too often. It's like eating a bar of chocolate at 9pm every night because you've been good all day! :o

Sounds like wedding plans coming together. We planned ours in 7 weeks and didn't have time to think about the extras so missed out on a lot of things. I think we spent around £2000 but have been married almost 7 years now.
That reminds me - must search for my dining table which is covered in random things at the moment!

I sometimes wish I had less time to plan and worry about ours!
The dining room table tends to get buried under paperwork. I cleared it a week or so ago but need to get a system in place to stop it happening. You've just reminded me to look out for desk tray things in the sale!

I'm a new MFW too so still trying to find the balance as well! I was a DFW and the debt was down to buying all sorts of tat! As a Dfw I went through a year of no spending on clothes, toiletries etc. Now I'm trying to look at things differently- firstly what are needs versus wants but also how useful things are, whether they are beautiful and make my heart sing and whether they are built to last. I am probably spending more on items now as I had been just going for the cheapest options. However I am far more discerning- I used to kid myself that it was ok to buy lots of things that were very cheap but I actually spent more in total! Now I want to buy less and make sure that I will want them for a long time and use hem. I'm sick at the thought of the amount of stuff i've ended up giving to charity and the house still feels a bit cluttered!

No- we really have everything we need and although there are things we'd like and might buy ourselves it doesn't seem right to ask for things from family and friends in our situation as it is second marriage for both of us.

Have managed to find more wedding decoration stuff in sale. Feather flowers for £1 each and mirror plate things at £1 each. Just hope when I put it all together it looks tasteful rather than cheap! Feathers have a special meaning for us so it is great to be able to incorporate them into our plans.

I'm the same way, I haven't brought anything that cheap/tatty for the house, my mum is always buying the cheapest of the cheap, she ends up buying replacements pretty frequently and they are always ugly so I have brought carefully and taken care of offers. Not too much decluttering to get rid of them when they get replaced. It does mean that no one will buy me anything for the house, which is probably for the best!

Georgie- I think I might have to get you on board to give me a talking too if I don't stick to my new rules!

Hi Radish- thanks for dropping in. It is really weird imagining someone taking the time to wade through my ramblings so far!! I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Time to list achievements of the year!
    1. Got engaged
    2. Became debt free
    3. Have shortened mortgage term by approximately 2 1/2 years
    4. Bought really decent car that should last us years
    5. Got new double glazing in back bedrooms
    6. Got new sewing machine and started teaching myself to sew
    7. Tried lots of new recipes, got ken wood chef for Christmas pressie and made my first fruit cake and with ideas from people here decorated it!
    8. Moved into beautiful house with OH, lots of decluttering and have sorted most rooms out.
    9. Have invited 2 sets of family to stay and hosted Boxing Day, having done little entertaining before as I didn't have much space and lacked confidence
    10. Have converted lots of work files to computer documents to make them easier to use
That's 10 things for 2010 but I might post more tomorrow!

Wow- I've got lots to be grateful for!
