Brilliant thread! Thank you for posting all this, I am definitely interested in becoming a more ethical consumer.

I would like to just throw out my current L'Oreal/Olay/Dove stuff and start from scratch, but it feels a bit contrary to moneysaving... Maybe I'll wait until I finish what I have then replace with cruelty-free, sustainably-sourced toiletries and cosmetics. How have you made the change?

    Hi,
I'm not chucking stuff out - like you say, not very moneysaving and I hate waste. Some stuff I gave away but mostly I'm using up what I've got and replacing it with "good stuff".

Not sure if anyone is interested but I've had great results using sodium bicarb as a face scrub/face wash. I just put a little bit on my damp skin when I'm in the shower. My skin looks a lot better (I had some tiny red bumps from overdoing the OCM and they're gone).
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

We felt we had to use our products up before buying more but are now the proud users of a fledgling collection of ethical toiletries. I have been boring my wife rigid banging on about it. :)
  • How have I been making my changes? Little by little! Some products I threw away outright, so disgusted, and guilt ridden was I with myself for buying them. Some I used up, some I gave away. A good 'halfway house' for skincare is the B.U.A.V approved Superdrug own brand ranges. Admittedly, they're not free of some of the substances I'd ultimately like to avoid, but their products and even the packaging is so similar to L'Oreal/Garnier/Olay/Dove/et al that you wonder why on earth those aforementioned brands haven't even tried to be cruelty free. Also, they are considerably cheaper!!!!!

One of the very early 'urghhhh!!' moments I had was after making a batch of 'melt & pour' organic & veggie glycerine soaps for Christmas presents. I was idly reading labels in my own bathroom and found a bar of, I think it was Nivea soap (or it might have been Lux) and spotted 'sodium tallowate'. Which is animal fat rendered down, usually beef fat..........

  • Tara Smith straight away conditioner is free from parabens, sles, glycols, phthalates, pegs, artificial colourings, synthetic fragrance and animal derivatives. It is not tested on animals and is approved by the vegan society.

I picked this up last month on the clearance shelf in Tesco for £2.42 (it can also be bought online in various sites for £4.99). I cannot praise this conditioner enough, I have hair that really tangles, I have literally broken brushes trying to get it smoothed out, and have a few brushes that are now missing a lot of bristles, but since I started using this a few days ago the brush literally glides through my hair and it stays silky soft and smooth all day, I no longer need to use frizz-ease serums. I wash my hair everyday and this stuff is amazing!

Depending on what it is, some of the higher level (marketed!) branded toiletries I actually ebayed even though it was half used, if it was something in say a tube not in a pot where the product could have been touched, I was surprised how much people paid for half used products.

So far in my testing I can vouch for Green People toothpastes. It took me a while to get used to not having a load of suds (from SLS) in my mouth but it does the job well.

Another vote here for Green People toothpaste, I use the fennel one, it's only about £2? I think and even better the tube rolls up like the old fashioned ones, so you can easily get the last bits out :D
