I am trying to move away from ingredients that can harm me, others, wildlife, or the environment and I am finding the links, recommendations and opinions very helpful in my quest. It's frightening to me that they put aluminium and mercury etc in products and tell us they're safe when any halfwit who ever did O Level Biology knows that the skin is a semi permeable membrane and absorbs some of what we put on it.
Olive oil and mayonnaise make good hair masks. I'm about to do a search for the Oil Cleansing Method now.0 -

Aluminium is used in antiperspirants. I have wondered myself if there is a risk that it might lead to Alzheimers, was that what you had in mind? What products contain mercury?Student of the science of beauty0 -
Has anybody tried salonskincare.com? They sell A'Kin, Nude, Burts Bees. Jo Wood Organics, Kimia & Ole Henriksen. I haven't ordered from there myself yet but I thought its another good website where we could try out a few different ranges and combine postage. The A'Kin prices looked pretty bargainous to me, even though I agree that they are not at all an expensive brand.
Thanks for the thread TomsMom, it's really got me thinking.0 -

Simply being free of man-made chemicals does not of itself mean there are "no toxins" or other ingredients which may have adverse effects. Please don't confuse natural with benign. Think deadly nightshade, foxgloves and lilies. Apple pips, nutmeg and uncooked kidney beans.
All of the above is said in a spirit of "we worry too much", but for balance, if you intend to scrutinise the effects of man-made chemicals on your wellbeing, perhaps you ought to consider what the effects of these "natural" products are too?

Well for me, it's not about things being natural or manmade. It's just about knowing what the ingredients in my cosmetic products are doing to me, my family, and the planet.
My concern with Squalane from sharks for example is about the environmental impact on the planets oceans from hunting sharks, the animal cruelty implicit in hunting sharks for cosmetics, the misinformation put out by the cosmetic companies that has even beauty scientist convinced that this isn't happening - and the misleading packaging. If it comes from sharks they should say so instead of trying to get us to believe all squalane has come from olives for decades.
With PEGs it's the recommendation from many respected researchers within the field (including the CIR http://www.cir-safety.org/info.shtml) that PEGs should not be applied to damaged skin. I have eczema, and a cat who scratches. I epilate my legs, pluck my eyebrows and get bitten to death in the summer, plus I lead a healthy outdoor lifestyle - so I've always got damaged skin!

Thanks for the links Cat. I've got the Shizen face Oil and Lip Balm and they're fab. They're also brilliant if you email them with any questions.LadyGooGoo wrote: »Thanks Cat ValouDoes anybody see anything worrying on that list?
Unless you are allergic to them Limonene and Linalool are only usually problematic (They can cause irritation and sensitization) if they are the synthetic type. Geraniol becomes Citral when oxidised and a lot of people are allergic to that. I would check a few of your current products and if you find you've been happily using products containing it then don't worry.
Citronellol is used as a pesticide but in the tiny amounts found in cosmetic products nobody seems very concerned about it so I'm not either. Like anything it can be an irritant though.
Other than those I don't see any red flags (but I'm still learning.:D) There's nothing in there that I would avoid put it that way.

Thanks to whoever it was who recomended Boots' new skincare range for young skin Good Things on one of these boards last week. I found it in my local Boots and it is affordable, free from nasties and all the products smell just brilliant.0

Hi again people in the know about nastie stuff in stuff
I am determined to rid myself of as much unessessary additives in toiletries as i have recently bought some natural shampoo and conditioner no dye, petrochemicals, sulphates, parabens, sexyhairorganics.....i checked the label and as far as i could see it was ok. BUT the main difference has been my scalp. :j
I've had for years a really dry itchy bumpy horrible feeling scalp and was told by my docs that i had to use ketancozle shampoo, which i did and it did lessen but never fully cleared. Anyway fast forward to 3 washes with my new shampoo and conditioner and my scalp is fab....its all gone and feels really good....so this is my push to get rid of the nasties. I must be allergic to something in them. We don't have sls in our toothpaste, so now for the rest.
I would also like to keep to a reasonable budget because i want to use for the family as well. So has anybody any views on the Naked range in boots please.they do a full range.
Or would i be as well buying some of this from ebay and adding my own essential oils? help appreciated as want to get it right ish and not waste much money please.
Cheers.0 -

I looked at the Naked range. What I did was google each ingredient and see if I was happy with what I read. I can't remember which one it was but there was one ingredient that I wasn't happy with (I was looking at the body washes) so I discounted it. I think it's down to your own research. Look at each ingredient to see what info is out there. Check more than one link so you get fairly unbiased info. If you're happy then try that one. I've started off with a couple of Weleda products. Haven't finished choosing everything yet as I'm replacing things as they run out.0 -

Good to read and a shame more doctors don't realise how some standard toiletries can affect people!
I personally avoid anything in Boots and stick to buying products in health shops or online health stores. I used to shop in Boots the whole time without thinking until I had a moment of realisation about what sort of products I was using and then went organic!
I ordered some bits from Essentials London yesterday as they stock the 3 main companies I like Jason/Lavera/Dr Hauschka, free next day delivery over £45 and a lot of the ranges are a bit discounted compared to what I can find in a health shop. I favour the Jason shampoos in particular sea kelp or aloe but there are so many brands to try:
