techynical query- if you dont upgrade to a digital tv (or get a freeview box etc),.
when the analogue signal is eventually turned off, your tv no longer be able to receive signals- so no requirement for the licence?Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

Why are you asking on here and not the goverment tv license department?
If you can afford the virgin media services then what is so cool about not forking out for a tv license?
Hey, if you can afford a car why not buy the whole garage? Duh why should they pay for something they don't need and don't use?0 -

It doesn't really affect things at all. There is no requirement to have a licence for possession of devices capable of receiving signals, only for use to watch or record as they are broadcast.
It might perhaps make it easier to prove to TVL that you are not watching telly, however this is also not relevant as the onus is on them to prove you are.0 -

If or when the licence man comes a knocking you don't have to let him in (unless he's armed with a warrant), you don't even have to talk to him, heck you don't even have to answer the door. If you do talk to him be very careful what you say, he's on commission and will use every dirty trick in the book and twist anything you say, so even if you are totally legal be very careful and do NOT sign anything . . provided you're not watching or recording live tv as it's broadcast, just tell him to do one.
There's no need to de-tune your telly or cut the aerial, it's up to him to prove you're doing something wrong, hows he gonna do that if you don't give him access?
I have a licence BTW . . wife watches corrie . . so well worth it:(0 -
We went to set up our TV licence and were baffled by this very thing!! We couldn't make out why we were paying a years worth of fee's over six months, and when I called them up she said that you pay six months in advance and get that back when you "cancel your TV licence".
Seriously, when are you likely to no longer need a TV licence?! When you're dead?! The money is no use to me then!!
Hello! Thanks for this, saved me a phone call! I couldn't understand why we would be paying a full year but only starting now! What a complete rip off!!0 -
..... just make sure that he can't see your tv showing a current broadcast as he walks up your garden path or hear a current broadcast while talking to you at the door!
If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me!

hellooooooooooooo
I have read through some of the links on here regarding if you have to have a TV licence or not and still none the wiser.
Yesterday I had a man round doing a survey on our local area and what facilities we would like etc.
Long story short
His last survey was a 50/50 split survey on households with and without a TV licence. So I asked him if it is true that you can have your TV plugged in with all available channels but as long as you do not and do not intend to watch BBC on a live broadcast you do not need a licence.
His reply was the 50% who did not have a licence did not watch or intend to watch the BBC and if they did watch BBC it was on Iplayer. They initially had several threatening letters and visits from the TV licence people and after 6 months none of them heard any more. Some have not had a licence for years.
I also asked if there are a lot of people that do not pay and his reply was that there are loads and a lot more than he thought and it surprised him.
So my question is how many money saving people on here do not pay a licence fee????
Personally I watch hardly any TV maybe three programmes a week none of which are on the BBC. The only programme I watch on the BBC is Top Gear which is not on all the time so is it worth £145 a year for top gear???
I know this has been debated on here but just wanted opinions. I know some people think that the BBC is value for money and that is there opinion and I am glad they get a service they think is value for money, If you get the use out of it then I am pleased for you.0
