    sounds annoying.
try to ignore it all. Check their website for an email address or number to call them. theyll probably say "yes thankyou, but we might still call around, as our findings show that most people who say they dont need tv licence, DO, when we inspect them, thankyou!"

as long as youve told them you dont need a tv licence (as i have), should be all ok. they were sending me letters, i called them, told them i dont need one, letters stopped. DOnt care if they call around. is it a crime to not answer the door?

    stay strong.
Thanks...I will. It's not a crime luckily but hell it makes me jump. Too many people knock on my door. The kleeneze catalogue and the betterware people never give up either as well.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I sussed this in 2009 and wrote to TVL about it. In return I got a typically "corporate" generic letter that really did fail to address any of the concerns and basically gave me a load of tosh about the system and how "convenient our customers find it" - but, it never explained why I ended up paying for 12 months licence in my first year (bought it up-front) but actually received 11 full month's licence and then, to add insult to injury when I had to change payment method to DD the following year why it was going to cost me the equivalent of 18 month's licence fees in that first year, then switching to 12 month's licence fees in the second and subsequent years. The net effect of all this is that TVL are holding the equivalent of 7 month's worth of MY money, in THEIR bank account and I will never see that money again.
Multiply my experience by the number of people this must happen to every year and it's clear to see how the public are being ripped off by TVL.

If/When you surrender your licence you will be refunded for any unused months - so you don't lose out - my daughter surrendered hers after 1 month of usage at university(altho' she had paid for 7 months) and got 6 months refunded.:)
In return for TVL "holding" your money you get to pay monthly without any interest charges - if you don't like the system go back to paying the whole lot up front!!

Cobblers as you normally have to pay a full year in advance then the first six months are paying double installments for this years license starting at 10 months in arrears decreasing to zero then after six months you start paying for next years initially one month in credit rising to six months in credit and then after the 12th month you are 6 months in arrears decreasing to zero then it starts again. Besides your argument about the odd one month you are not permanently in credit - your account varies monthly between 6 months in credit to 6 months in arrears.

We went to set up our TV licence and were baffled by this very thing!! We couldn't make out why we were paying a years worth of fee's over six months, and when I called them up she said that you pay six months in advance and get that back when you "cancel your TV licence".

Seriously, when are you likely to no longer need a TV licence?! When you're dead?! The money is no use to me then!! ;)
  • I read on the tv license website that you only need it to watch live tv as it is broadcast. So if I stream, download and watch on demand services I don't need it. Does this sound reasonable? Virgin's on demand catch up tv is huge and I could use this without a license because I am watching it after it is being broadcast. Is this going to work and if not could you point out some clause or fine print that I am missing?

    Thanks!

That's like saying using Sky+ to watch programmes with a 5 second delay would not require a licence.

    Dream on.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Their' site says that only live broadcasts require a license and on demand services don't.

"You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder."

"However, you don’t need to be covered by a licence if you’re only using ‘on-demand’ services to watch programmes after they have been shown on TV"
