That's a lot of hassle doing it your way. Paying £29.10 for 5 months then ringing up to cancel the DD then setting up a new DD to again pay 5 months at £29.10. Wouldn't you rather pay an even amount of around £12.12 throughout the year? Personally, I prefer quarterly in advance although there is a fee to pay using that method.

I have been doing it with 5-monthly payments a year for years without any hassle. They have perhaps done away with this method of payment. Even though they shouldstill have asked my permission to change to 12 monthly payments and start taking it out of my account 6 months before renewal date. They did not do that. Quite apart from the unexpected withdrawal from my account - I might have wanted to change to some of the other methods of payment like lump sum or quarterly etc.

Just looked at my bank statements. The withdrawal that by the licencing authority made after I had my licence fee paid off for that year, actually did make me go into the red costing me £25 in a bank fee. Grrrrr! Grrrrr!

No point in asking anybody about getting my bank fee paid by anybody. Maybe I should complain to BBC Radio 4 Money Box. Snowball's chance in hell of them taking my call I would say.

Then ask for the bank fee back. If it's your first fee for the year they'll give it back. If the direct debit was taken in error and reversed later they'll give it back. If your balance is so close to a zero balance then do not use direct debit they always have the right to take any amount they wish. Use cash for all your bills. Pay annually in advance. For someone who says it's not been a hassle it looks like you have a bit of hassle this time.

How can I ask for the bank fee back from the bank? It's not their fault

It was no hassle with the 5 payments as I was told in advance. I was not told in advance about the monthly payments starting 6 months before the next renewal date.

Its been sorted out as the licencing people said they would refund what I have paid in advance and then send me a rewenal when my current licence runs out in August. Then I can have a CHOICE of what way to pay. A bit late for me to avoid a bank fee, but there you are, I will have to live with it and move on.

I see. The problem probably in my particular case is going from 5 monthly payments a year to 12 monthly payments a year.

When you set up the paying in advance did payments start coming out of your account 6 months in advance or was there a lump sum of half the fee followed by 6 months payments for the other half?

I suppose my gripe is that nobody asked my permission to change the method of payment.

Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what happened when I first set the arrangement up-its so long ago but I suspect it was always 1/12 per month in advance/arrears:)

How many times do the TV licensing people need to knock on the door? It's been happening for two weeks. They'll knock on the door in the morning around 10AM then again the same car will appear in the afternoon knock on the door and drop off the letter "We said we'd call". So far in the last two weeks they have done this 4 times but each day with a different car. It's getting quite annoying. The thing is I never answer the door to people I don't know (due to bailiffs chasing a debt) so can't easily tell them to go away. Should I call them? Is there a freephone number? I have tried calling them years ago and they said they have to send someone to check and I said don't bother so they did at the time agree to not send anyone. I personally don't see why I need to ring every now and again to tell them I don't need or want something that they think I should have to have.

    sounds annoying.
try to ignore it all. Check their website for an email address or number to call them. theyll probably say "yes thankyou, but we might still call around, as our findings show that most people who say they dont need tv licence, DO, when we inspect them, thankyou!"

as long as youve told them you dont need a tv licence (as i have), should be all ok. they were sending me letters, i called them, told them i dont need one, letters stopped. DOnt care if they call around. is it a crime to not answer the door?

    stay strong.
