I will not be renewing my TV licence at the end of June because I do NOT watch TV any more. I think I watched about 10 hours max in the early part of last year (I really don't know why I bothered renewing last year). I'll have no problem inviting any TV licencing people to come in and confirm if it will mean a stop to the constant reminder letters. I will be de-tuning the TV and removing the aerial cable. Analogue switch off also happens in September anyway so even less to worry about if you don't have a freeview box or freesat and dish.

    Hi,

Just moved into a new place alone and contacted the TV Licensing company to arrange a new license. I was expecting to pay a monthly amount of under £15, amounting to the fee of £145 for the year. Why is it that the licensing company want to charge me £29 a month, and that the license will then only last until Oct?

I rang the contact number and was told "that's just how it is." I just wondered if any one had any advice? I want to have a TV but having just moved I cannot afford £145 in one go which I believe would take me up to next April? Or would that also only take me up until Oct?

    I am confused please help!

    Thanks!

Yes that's just how it is. You need to pay the first year upfront. You'll then get a license until the end of April next year but you need to arrange to pay next years licence fee monthly if you wish. It will then cost you around £15 per month but that starts being deducted in a few months time.

It isn't recommended by others but I prefer the quarterly in advance payment method. It costs an extra £5 a year but you are only ever 3 months in advance rather than 12 or 18 months. It's only £37.50 every 3 months.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

You can say that anyway - in fact you don't have to say anything to them. They have NO rights whatsoever - actually , I lie - they have the same rights as your paper boy or the guy delivering leaflets for the local Chinese; would you let them in and look at your TV to see if you are using it ??

If you have removed their implied right of access you can sue TVL.

Yes and No ! they start sending them out again after 3 years ............

If you get a letter from a TV licencing, throw it directly into the bin. Do not get into any conversation with them ... Let them work for it, do not do any work which suppose to be their work.

It is their duty to prove it that you are watching the TV without licence, not you. Having TV does not mean you have been using it for watching TV programs.
