If you have equipment which enables you to watch ANY currently broadcast programming you must have a licence. If you only watch catch up on a PC (using a TV as a monitor) you would be fine. The Sky equipment or an aerial are technically the licensed part. Though they would look very hard if you still had a TV as you could just have a portable aerial.

That is completely wrong. There is nothing preventing you from having the equipment that enables you to watch live broadcast TV, as long as you don't use it for that purpose.

No this is wrong, you need a licence if you watch or plan to watch or record anything that is broadcast live not simply that you have the equipment to receive it or record it. You can declare as much to Craptia and that's that*.

    * In theory, in practice, they will say you are a liar and hassle you.

You need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder.
    Watching TV on the internet

You need to be covered by a licence if you watch TV online at the same time as it's being broadcast on conventional TV in the UK or the Channel Islands. Video recorders and digital recorders like Sky+ You need a licence if you record TV as it's broadcast, whether that's on a conventional video recorder or digital box. Mobile phones A licence covers you to watch TV as it's broadcast on a mobile phone, whether you're at home or out and about.

Form on-line to tell them you do not use a TV .
But its true they tend to regard you as a person who does not tell the truth .

Essence of the regulations LIVE tv watch or record for later use must have a licence .
Catchup TV from IPlayer etc not needed under the present rules .

Indeed, you'll get increasingly shrill letters from Craptia and then one of their stormtroopers will visit to try and get you to take a licence (I believe they are on commission).

If you are acting legally and are aware of how limited their authority is, it can be quite fun when they come to your door and you stand and laugh at them. :rotfl:
  • do they always come by then???

Not always, sometimes you get a series of escalating and increasingly shrill letters "WE WILL TAKE YOU TO COURT", then generally someone will visit. However many people report that you simply get the first letter in the cycle again and they go from there...

Then what I have said is not completely wrong.

At work we have a very basic old style portable TV/DVD & it took years for the Office Manager to finally convince the TV License people we didn't need a license.

I would imagine things should become a little clearer once analogue is switched off as you will clearly need some sort of freeview TV or a separate freeview, Sky or Cable box to watch broadcast TV.

The position is the same, if you watch (or record) something live you need to pay, if you don't, you don't.
