But I already knew how to use Google, and had googled for 2nd hand bikes in Nottingham (coming up with that same bike shop. I was actually hoping to get personal recommendations from sombody).

But, surely a personal recommendation from people you don't know is worthless? I could recommend a shop that I'd never been to, or one that was rubbish, and you'd never know.

But why would you bother to recommend a shop you had never been to, or was rubbish (unless of course you are a deliberate trouble-maker) ? .

It was a simple enough request in my first posting, I thought ... After all, there are lots of parents on here, I thought maybe someone in the area might have recently visited a shop which gave particularly good service.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

OP you are right that at 11 he will more than likely be on an adults bike with 26" wheels - there will be a range of frame sizes to choose from though.

You may be in luck as there appears to be a bike recycling community project that takes in unwanted bikes and renovates them. Usually these projects are good as you know the bike will be safety checked. Full details here:

    Hope that helps.
