A slippery slope that can end in rough sleeping or a hostel for the homeless.

    Hi RA,

That is my ultimate fear, but thanks for helping me to see sense of what will happen unless I sort this now.

SSG - Thanks. I had a word with myself, and called my Housing Association earlier and just caught them before 5pm.

Apologised for falling behind. The chap there has been very friendly and helpful since I fell behind last year, and ended up in Court in March of this year (purely to get their costs back - not for 'possession' but looking back, they could've quite easily gone for possession, as I'd been around £900 in rent arrears in January) so I really do not want to fall behind any more now.

Looking at my rent account on the HA's website, I'd thought I'd owed more, but the figure hadn't taken into account their payment due in Housing Benefit from the Council.

The HA chap confirmed that I owe them £40 as of today, which I promised to pay this Friday.

    He was fine with this.

So, that's my most pressing 'priority debt' sorted out.

I was going to pay one of the Money Shop cheques off, but paying that off over my Rent is bonkers.

I could still pay Money Shop 2 weeks on Friday to extend the loan, but I am loathe to fall into that trap, and again my priority debts need paying first. In reality, I will not be able to afford to pay MS the 'loan extension fee' for all 5 cheques - ie - 5 * £17.98 = £89.90 - just to hold them off, without even paying anything off. Jesus.

I have called CCCS about 6 weeks back, and will be calling again this evening (am getting figures / paperwork together), and am still seriously considering a DRO, however the one thing stopping me is the possibility of getting into trouble with either Money Shop, my bank (A&L / Santander) or both for fraud re the £500 of cheques.

My head is a shed though, and I can not keep mentally juggling money about like this, and so I might have to bite the bullet and just go for the DRO, and have done with the debts just so I can concentrate on getting my health back 100%, and keeping on top of my Rent / Electric etc.

The thought of getting into trouble with the Insolvency Service / Bank / Money Shop / Police though is too scary and is holding me back.

Sorry to ramble. Just need to get it out a bit.

I keep trying to be objective, and listen to what you guys have wrote - that it's very unlikely that I'll be going to prison for a £500 debt.

However, what I did was illegal - the writing of the cheques which (in the back of my mind) I knew I wouldn't be able to afford (as well as telling MS that I was still working in my old job - when I wasn't). The Bank or MS will see straight away that this was fraud.

All because I was depressed, anxious, and wanted a drink.

I really need a clean slate though for my sanity, and a Debt Relief Order seems the only 'final' way out of all this merry go round of mess.

It's the possible consequences of doing so that are worrying me.

    Cheers all,

    Sim x

Yes I agree, there is nothing more important than your home. I would be inclined to prioritise this over the Money Shop come Friday.......

    Take note Sim

    Spot on, thanks SSG x

Sober here, and about to spend the £20 I have left on food.

Feel very low. Can't see any future, but trying to see the woods for the trees.

    Hope you're all ok x

I'm not promising miracles here but if you bite the bullet & deal with it all it's likely that the consequences will be a great deal less scary than you had imagined
