What a brilliant thread. I've signed up to e-bluey, the yahoo group and written my first bluey all within the hour! Oh what I get up whilst I'm supposed to be doing coursework but decide to check out MSE!!! I'll keep you posted as to what response my bluey gets!

I met my hubby after answering an advert in best magazine in 2000..asking for people to write to the guys who at that time were in Bosnia at the time...we have now been married 5 years and he is an absolute diamond :-)......
As much as the guys in Iraq appretiate gifts, it will be the messages that mean the most...before i met my hubby he did Gulf 1, kosovo, bosnia, ireland amongst others and since being married has obviously done Gulf 2....which he fortunately made it back from safe and sound...he hasnt been called for Afgahnistan thank god...and he always maintains that there is nothing like receiveng mail..even if its from someone you dont know - so i would urge anyone even considering it to go for it.... and if you want to put pen to paper...blueys are free if you ask for a handfull at any post office and they dont need stamps....

Your husband sounds very nice but in the interest of balance my OH was in the Forces and he laughed when I told him about this thread. Said they used to just do it for the photos and then had a monster board where they ran a competition for who had the ugliest penpal. People choose to be penpals for a whole variety of reasons....

thats really cruel to the people who give up their time to write!
but im sure there are some genuine soldiers who do appreciate the mail.
and for those who dont appreciate the mail at least they have something to do when it is quiet, comparing all the uglys!
i would write to cheer them up but i do know some people write to try and find love, fair play to them all, its a good deed anyhow!

    happy writing!

If I help you please say Ta! :D

I don't think men in the forces would admit to one another that they look forward to receiving the mail and what it means to them. IMO they were just playing it down and pretending it's just to get the photos.
