I met my hubby after answering an advert in best magazine in 2000..asking for people to write to the guys who at that time were in Bosnia at the time...we have now been married 5 years and he is an absolute diamond :-)......
As much as the guys in Iraq appretiate gifts, it will be the messages that mean the most...before i met my hubby he did Gulf 1, kosovo, bosnia, ireland amongst others and since being married has obviously done Gulf 2....which he fortunately made it back from safe and sound...he hasnt been called for Afgahnistan thank god...and he always maintains that there is nothing like receiveng mail..even if its from someone you dont know - so i would urge anyone even considering it to go for it.... and if you want to put pen to paper...blueys are free if you ask for a handfull at any post office and they dont need stamps....-6 -8 -3 -1.5 -2.5 -3 -1.5-3.50 -

I rememeber the days of basic training when they handed out the mail. You always wished you had a letter from your parents, friends etc.
In the 49 days of basic training to join the raf, i only received one letter from my parents telling me what was going on back home.
I guess it just breaks the time up, but these days technology has advanced and from the main operating unit will be a internet terminal, if they are on the US base, they will have sky tv, free phone calls, free internet etc. The welfare package is much better than what the uk forces provide.
I remember being in the iraq no fly zone, my boss would always forward the bills that arrived for me..
Half way round the world getting bills that were 2 weeks out of date....
How nice of them..0 -
I have a family member in the Army -and he says that when he is away the only thing that keeps them going is the letters and parcels.
When he was last out he made it a competition between me, his wife and his mum to see who could write the most letters - and the few letters we received from him would always say something like -you're 2 letters behind - catch-up! or well done - you're in the lead!! Little things kept him going.
I used to send a care package every 3 weeks - and I'd fill it full of daft things like lucky bags, pringles, magic dust (can you imagine 20 hard as nails soilders sat around giggling as they all let the magic dust explode on their tongue!! This actually happened),
I once sent a sticker collector book - and then every parcel had a couple of packs of stickers for them to fill the book with (think it was football). Just stuff they can leave behind when they come home.
If anyone does get friendly enough to send a parcel to the lads in Iraq/Afghanistan - I can only recommend that you send hand cream - apparently they are desperate for it - that and pringles!!
