When a laptop goes onto standby/sleep mode/Hibernation, it means all of the core components turn off and dumps the data into the RAM. and then when you power it on, it reloads from the ram and starts up the HD and everything else.

    Not exactly true....

Standby: Maintains your session, keeping the computer running on low power with data still in memory.

I pressed hibernate, so it basically should have dumped my current windows session into Ram and shut down everything aside from the ram (so it can re boot quicker), it was not on charge with NO mains plugged in...it still leaked and burnt with no power on and no mains plugged in!!

I'm with you, lloydyd. Get back on to HP.

A laptop in hibernation should not be drawing power. Hence it should not overheat.

Totally agree. So surely I have a case against HP for a piece of equipment that is not fit for purpose and is dangerous?

I can't see what difference it being on standby all night makes. What if the laptop was in use all night by someone it still would've got too hot and leaked.

Mine sits downstairs on standby night after night and has done for three years.

Say what you like, laptops shouldn't be leaking battery acid and burning holes in carpets.

Big_Lee's opinion differs. He/she thinks that it's on low power. Perhaps it's all about how low 'low' actually is. I've left my laptop in hibernation for hours and it doesn't get hot. But it's not an HP one.

    That's a really good point.

So did you put it into Standby or Hibernate.... I am starting to get confused as they are two different things and you said in your original post standby but later said hibernate???

Thanks, at last someone with some sense. When you press start, then shut down you have 4 options (on most models) Logoff, shutdown, std by and hibernate.

I pressed hibernate, so it basically should have dumped my current windows session into Ram and shut down everything aside from the ram (so it can re boot quicker), it was not on charge with NO mains plugged in...it still leaked and burnt with no power on and no mains plugged in!!

That is how I tend to close down my laptop and whilst it still recharges the battery until fully charged it then switches off.

If HP say that you haven't followed whatever rules they have then the big question is why did they offer you a free replacement laptop ?

I do hope you have some of the conversations in writing and it wasn't just phone calls. It will make it easier for you.

I would get a quote for replacement take pictures of the damage and write to HP giving them 14 days to respond or you will raise a small claims action for the damage and a replacement laptop.Point out that they offered a replacement laptop which would seem to be an acceptance of a degree of responsibility.
