Just because he claims he has more power, doesn't mean he does... it's very easy to look at the over-inflated figures exhaust companies give and get things confused.
Only real test is a before -> after dyno reading from the same place... but I highly doubt any OEM exhaust would strangle 15% of the available power.
ECU tuning on the other hand, I wouldn't say 20% is always a fair figure - Audi for example make many engines which are internally identical, just loaded with different maps - the 130 and 170 BHP engines are exactly the same and so you can reliably get 170 out of a 130 just by swapping the stock maps.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
Hi JakG
I didn't want to argue and was not, I was just stating what I believe to be correct being I have owned the car for over 3 years now, and have driven a standard Mondeo which have hardly any power behind them.
Also it states it on the invoice.
I am often shocked myself at the amount of power behind my engine0 -
Claims of extra power can be very misleading. At 7000rpm you might gain 20bhp as the exhaust is so free flowing but at 2000rpm you might have lost 20bhp because of the lack of back pressure.
I've messed about with changing exhausts, cats etc and on a clio 16v I had I swapped the decat pipe back for the cat as although it made the car rev freer at higher revs, it was much worse than standard everywhere else, which is where you are the majority of the time.I did the same on a turboed car and it made a huge difference everywhere but then turbos hate back pressure.
All an engine is, is a big air pump. The more you air you can get in, the more power it makes.Remapping a TDI will allow the turbo to force more air in(boost) and then add more fuel. Its only really limited to what the engine can take without something failing, or a restriction rears its head such as a poorly designed downpipe.Basic tuning such as a remap is usually ok but if you start getting hungry for more power you really do have to think about everything else in the chain and it starts getting very expensive.0 -
I have been into tuning for about 15 years and had my Audi remapped about a year ago my Motek engineering they took it from 140 to 175bhp on a 50/50 map below 50% throttle its on standard map above 50% you get the full beans.
so keeping fuel enonomy (if not thrashing it) and still have the power when you need/want it.
All these maps do is get the can to use its full potential, manafacturers always air on the side of caution as fuel and elevation conditions are differant the world over so they make a car that fit's all ok but non well.
will it shorten your engine life? probably if you tune any engine it puts more stress on it so wont last as long (even less if you drive it on the limit)
So it really is up to you. oh my car is still under warranty but as they use the original map just played with and reloaded the audi dealer can't tell. although one of the mechanics did mention that "it had some squirt":rotfl:0 -
When I bought my car it came with the exhaust and the invoice for it, and stated the specs on it, it was bought from a high performance car specialist, total cost of exhaust was £1500 + VAT, and £200 fitting.
Its a twin stainless steel system right back to the engine
And think you will find my car defo has the power
Being Stainless and expensive won't give you more power just like that. Gains from exhaust systems are usually small on production specification engines.Happy chappy0 -
It states clearly on the invoice bill the specs and one of those is 15% more BHP and more throttle response.
From what I remember I believe the manifold has been changed too.
I am always amazed by people driving BMW's on 2010 plates that try an overtake on the motorway
Needless to say, they fail every time against my 2000 plate Mondeo :rotfl:
The tuning world is full of bull-!!!!.
Have you got a before and after dyno run?Happy chappy0 -
Given the OP is talking about a diesel Golf, the claims aren't so ridiculous - common rail diesels are extremely tuneable by remap / tuning box and increased performance with overall better fuel economy is not unheard of.0
-
The OP is talking about a Diesel, I'm talking about an exhaust system on a 2.5 petrol engine.Happy chappy0
-
The OP is asking about a mkV Golf which is PD not CR0
-
One reason I never also got a remap was because the exhaust on my car provides 15% extra BHP
...sorry couldt help my self.
that pipe on a standerd engine will prob give you 1bhp and -10flb of torque by less back pressure. the 15% extra bhp your feeling is the improved throttle responce0
