Re-map on VW Golf MkV 140
Got a VW Golf MkV 140bhp and was speaking to a work mate the other day who has a Mk4 that has been remapped upto about 190bhp and he says that his mpg is better than before he had it done yet it is absolutely rapid now!!
This got my thinking that i would like mine doing but i'm just a little weary incase it would void my manufacturers warranty or if it has any other problems associated with it? I do alot of miles so i wouldnt want the chip to compromise anything i.e making parts etc life less than it would be normally.
Anyone got any knowledge in this area??

Petrol or Diesel? Work mate is probably believing his own fantasy.Happy chappy0

they're both GT Sport 2.0 TDi's
i can cofirm that his is still doing 50+mpg as he's showed my on the dash.0 -
If you get a fault in engine electrics that requires dealer to plug it in they could tell it has been mapped and warranty would be void.
As for mpg I can well believe economy is either the same or better when mapped if done properly,I had a Subaru wrx that I modded and had a bespoke ecutek remap done on vpower fuel afterwards I was getting about 6 extra mpg
On a diesel golf it could well be more noticeable but you need to weigh up if it is worth doing in the long run depending on cost of map,how many miles you do and how long you are going to keep the car.
If you do get it done make sure it is done by a reputable mapper.0 -
A lot of these remaps eliminate the input from the engines knock sensor, this means more power at the cost of your pistons (see pinking/detonation/knock).
Someone did this to a Bentley, got something near 900 BHP...... 30k miles later its at the dealership with a scrapped engine and a large repair bill looming on the horizon.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Most remaps are a "one size fits all" style, which may give a little more BHP but are unlikely to give more MPG.
Your engine isn't the one where theres a 170 BHP version above it with no internal differences, is it?Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
It will invalidate any warranty as its not a dealer approved addon. It also puts extra strain on components but engines are usually run on the safe side by manufacturers to make them last longer.More power is more heat so other areas can suffer if overlooked such as oil and water temps.Your clutch is also going to suffer as diesels make a lot more torque when remapped. Its often recommended that you change other parts to compliment rempas such as downpipes due to the extra exhaust gases generated. In the short term your mpg will go down as you will be more inclined to boot it as its still fresh and exciting to have the extra oomph. You are also going to have to inform your insurance company and it will load your premium, if they still want to cover you that is.Thats the bad stuff out of the way
.
On the plus side its been done by many people without problems, you can get extra mpg as you can be in a higher gear with less throttle at the same speed due to more torque. It will make your car a lot quicker and incline you to keep it longer, thats a money saving in itself.
There's a VAG specialist tuner called JBS in Chesterfield, they do a lot of these remaps for Seats/Audis/VWs and even have their own twin turboed Audi TT demo car with over 450bhp IIRC.I'm sure they can give you all the info needed and they also show tuning packages on their website.0 -

Mine was a bespoke map done by someone reputable knock sensor not messed with,he used det cans to make sure no detonation he also only took it as far as the engine/gearbox can reliably take.it was not off the shelf type remap nearly 4 hours of tweaking to get it just right.
Not cheap though from memory it cost me £7500 -
If it's a TDi then significant power increases can be achieved. If you use the extra power then mpg won't improve. In some cases if can improve mpg. As to it being a good idea, well, it's your own risk. The mappers don't do the same level as testing as the original manufacturers.Happy chappy0

On broad computer will not be reading correctly on dash
I was going to get a engine ECU remap or a super chip however I decided against it, what really is the point as you can't do those speeds, of course unless you want to lose your license or even kill someone!0 -

it is not all about the increase in speed,it improves the overall driveability of the car.0
