Errrrrm.
Now correct me if I am wrong, but surely if you are hoovering inside the computer with a domestic hoover you are creating static which is actually more likely to fry the computer than taking out the heatsink and turning said computer on?Signaller, author, father, carer.0 -
I also vac my pc but don't understand why " ...with a domestic hoover you are creating static ..." .I've never seen static from our hoover , in any normal use.0

ive ordered the dust blower.
gonna open pc, and blow all dust i can see. and follow insturction on this thread about the loud whiring noise, ive noticed, the noise starts when got multiple tabs open on a browser, say video like youtube, streaming and especially downloading, but sometimes even when not doing anything much, like one app open only... ill see if i can pin point the noise.
it never used to make this noise when i used to download.....now its like strained with basic tasks it seems.
i have vacummed inside before, its fine, dyson too, unplugged pc etc obviously.0 -
If you're going to blow all the dust OUT of the PC, have your Dyson close by to hoover it up, so that you don't merely end up with a dust mountain in the room, or you breathe in all the dust that you've dislodged.......
DIY face mask, anyone?0 -
That little dust blower linked from ebay wont shift a mm of a bad dust problem.
It may say it's designed for computers but I don't think it is, it also mentions cameras and watches, so I'm guessing its main intended purpose was for cleaning SLR sensors.
To put it mildly, trying to clean your computer with that will be like trying to cut down a tree with a strimmer.
And all that said, did we ever confirm that dust was the issue?!
What you really need to do is:
- confirm which fan (or hard drive) is making the noise
- confirm that there is or isn't a dust problem
Other things you may want to consider; location of your PC, if you are covering air vents or have a high ambient temperature, you will get overheating problems, which will cause fan speeds to increase.0 -
right people, finally have opened it.
think the sound itself was coming from the fan, well i think its the fan
please see pic
http://yfrog.com/0mpcfanj
and looking inside/around it, there is some dust build up...
i dont think its been properlly cleaned in years (5ish)+, since it was built.. (fan)
I have the dust blower,
but its tricky to clean it.
have tried to pull/twist the fan thing off, but its quite strongly fitted on...dont want to break it.
there are 4 black thick screwy things holding it all down, ive unscrewed them,
the whole fan is almost loose, but not quite,
but it looks like i just need to take the black cap thing off the fan ,so then i can clean the dust from within ....
but its not easilly coming off....
anyone help?
maybe the black thing is not meant to come off and it built onto the main metal fan...in which case i should
screw it all back in, right?0 -
It's a bit of dust, nothing, blow it out with your mouth or a brush, or gets the vac on it.
Removing a minute bit of dust from a fan isn't going to stop the fan coming on, and will make little difference to the cooling effectiveness of a fan. Hot air gets removed from the case whether the fan has a little bit of surface dust or not.
Compressed air and gizmo's for cleaning dust are the pc equivalent of bottled water.
From your description, a fan (could be graphics card or processor fan rather than case) comes on when you are watching video, quite normal, because the chips are doing more work and getting hotter, if it does it at rest, look at what you have running on the pc instead.!!

yeah dust blower is good, it gets into the fan...and blowing with mouth did trick too... im sneezing now, just snorted some beconase up nose...
now im having trouble screwing it back down...nightmare...
fitted it.
put pc on, it powered off while booting up.
now have noticed fan is not too tight, bit loose,
would pc not boot up if fan is a bit loose?0 -
Those intel push pins are rubbish -here's a video. Be carefull they are going properly into the m/board holes or the ends bend apart and will not fit into hole and push down 'til you hear click -can need a v. hard push.

It will be overheating ,make sure it's seated properly. You may have to apply some fresh thermal paste but you may be ok without doing that as long as it's seated properly0 -
thankyouthankyou
had another go, it screws on, but is easily loose again, i think.
Ive screwed in place, and havnt tested how secure it is, feels ok. i think the slightest test to see if secure, unsecures it again.
Have just booted up, booted up fine...
streaming 3 vids off google chrome, and fans not making noise... this seems to have worked.
If this has been solved. ... so dust build was causing the loud noise how exactly? making the fans work harder making the electronics shake and vibrate?
I hope this lasts. Almost silent. Exhales deeply. It was such a distraction the noise, could be heard from adjacent rooms and down the telehpone line when i spoke on phone.
PS. one more problem. The CD drive, the bay, it opens randomly, i shut it, it opens again. Off and on over the years, sometimes its fine, then just resurfaces. NOt a major issue, as pc works fine, and so do the cd drive, as when put cd or dvd in , it reads it.
