but if its the processsor/CPU fan you suspeect don't do this for more than a few seconds (4-5) at most if you don't want a fried processor.... and use something plastic/non conductive
Don't be frightened to hold the fan. A whole minute should be fine if the heatsink has any size. Not that you will need that long - but give yourself time to listen. Running a processor without a heatsink will however ensure it fries on the 4-5 second time scale.

If you're going to blow the dust out from one side of the case fan, have the household vacuum cleaner running to hoover it up on the other side once it's airborne...

It has been a while since I had a PC but from memory Intel processors had thermal sensors built in so if the fan failed, the processor switched to shut down mode, thereby protecting the expensive bit of the computer. I would expect AMD processors to have such protection.

Simple buy a can of compressed air and spray it on all the fans and watch all the dust go everywhere.

    Job done.

no that looks kinda pathetic, you want one of these

    http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=compressed air can

(tho personally i get by flicking accumulations out of my heatsinks with a small screwdriver and not worrying too much about the rest)
  • some of those are compressed gas.

but the compressed air will run out after a few uses.

    They are all compressed gas.

yes it will run out eventually, however I believe the duster you linked to will prove less effective than leaning close to your PC and blowing on it.

you've been advised the most appropriate tool and a few zero cost alternatives. if you want to go spending money on something else feel free to

I use a small paintbrush and hold the vac pipe near- not had any probs, tho' you could leave pc plugged in to mains with the socket switched off for an earth.
Most of the canned air is propane or butane!!

I have a lappy where I was convinced the fan was being noisy - it turned out to be the hard drive making the noise.
