PC fan is always going full throttle

Options
hi
i have a desktop pc.
Fan never used to come on.

Actually i dont know if its a fan noise or hard drive noise.

But about 6 months ago, i fitted a new hard drive into the tower.
And about a few weeks later, this noise started to happen.

Even when ive only got like one app running, the noise is present.
Whenever im on the phone to someone they say who is that sawing or drilling? when i tell them they cant believe its the PC fan.

Its worrying, as i always have PC on, and its distracting also as i need to concentrate when doing things at home.

Im not too techy and the thought of dealing with this is not appealing.

any thoughts anyone?

thankyou

have you cleaned inside the tower, the fan could be clogged up with dust.

also check if everything is fitted correctly it could be a vibration

about a year ago i vacuumed inside tower.
yeah i should do that again.

but you cant really go and clear dust in fan, as its kinda obstructed by machinery..

its a drilling/whirring sound. ok ill try feeling things in there, to see if screwed in place solidly.

    thanks.

It could be the bearing on the fan that's worn and causing the noise, or it could just be the dust build up making it rev higher than it needs. Your vacuum wont really shift it so try a can of compressed air - just make sure you do it outside! :)

Take the lid off. Hold the fan still while you switch on. Is the noise still there? If it has gone, replace the fan.

but if its the processsor/CPU fan you suspeect don't do this for more than a few seconds (4-5) at most if you don't want a fried processor.... and use something plastic/non conductive

The case fan will have a cable leading to either a plug/socket on the power supply cabling, or to a pin set on the motherboard.

Switch off the PC, disconnect from mains, and open up. With either an anti-static wrist strap in place, or wearing thin rubber gloves, disconnect the fan from its power supply plug.

Connect PC to mains, switch on. If noise has gone, then the case fan is at fault and either needs clean or replace. Replacements are cheap from Maplin.

To determine if the cause is vibration, leave the fan connected to the power supply, but remove it from the case (PC still switched off) and leave it hanging loose, then power up and see how quiet it is on its own

If noise hasn't gone, determine what other fans are fitted. With the cover off and the PC operating, can you hear if the noise is coming from anywhere in particular?

Simple buy a can of compressed air and spray it on all the fans and watch all the dust go everywhere.

    Job done.

just take the fans out and clean them. I prefer to do that rather than BUY AIR!!!!!
