Think about the mantra Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Only invite the people you really want at YOUR wedding - this will reduce the amount consumed
Create your own traditions, forget about all of those OTT brides magazines with their stupid 'must have' suggestions for weddings. Have what is personal and meaningful to you. If that means a band playing rock music then so be it. If you just go with what is essential to you then you will be reducing as well.
Ask friends and family to contribute with anything you want for your wedding that they might already have. Don't forget the old rhyme, something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. That was an ethical wedding with all that reusing going on.
Wedding dresses always used to be a good dress that could be worn again later. It was only in the last century that a special wedding dress became the norm as clothes were mass produced. If you choose something that you can wear again you will be lessening your effect on the environment. If it is a vintage dress then so much the better.
Use local food/flowers and ensure as much as possible is recycled afterwards.
Back in 1978 I got married for the princely sum of £80:eek: I can honestly say that I had a wonderful day with people I loved. It was later that it all fell apart:oTrue wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060 -

But thinking about it .... reduced food bill, recycling, - no reusing though:D However vegans like me just might complain - I know we would be the ones to be eaten:o
But seriously my sister invited everyone she thought she 'had' to invite and the usual row broke out. I only invited people my husband and I wanted there - sure there was a bit of a row beforehand but on my wedding day all was wonderful.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. It's unbelievable that people argue over a wedding!! Seems to me these people are selfish, only thinking of themselves and not the wedding couple or the day and the other guests :rolleyes: Some people need a good slap!Honorary Northern Bird bestowed by AnselmI'm a Board Guide and volunteer to help get your forum questions answered and keep the forum running smoothly on Special Occasions, Green/Ethical, Motoring/Overseas/UK Travel & Flood boards, it's not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. I've read that rice isn't that good, because birds will eat it, and as it's uncooked, it's pretty bad for them. I think chicks can choke on the kernals and it does something nasty to the adults as well.0

I have taken to using dried petals for confetti. It is recycling something that has already had one use, its bio-degradable and far more importantly it is personal cos it came from your garden (or that of a willing friend:D ) Just collect the flowers as they are about to wilt and dry them for a few minutes in the microwave (if you are in a hurry) or leave them in the airing cupboard if you are not. You will need to layer them as when they are in a heap they go all mouldy - you don't need to know how I know that:o
In one of my recent big clear outs I found some rose petals that I dried years ago and still very useable as confetti.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060 -

i love all the messages in here - it's great that none of us will ever become bridezillas!
everyone wants a lovely wedding day, but sometimes people (no-one here!) seem to forget it's the marriage that's important. i nearly fainted when i heard the average UK wedding costs £20K, are people mad?
i recently went to the wedding of two friends - married in a lovely registry office; cooking and waitressing by friends and relatives; bride's dress by friend's mum; music by friends that DJ and are in a band; photography by everyone who had their camera/phones with them; transport between venues by bus; etc. it was the loveliest, most moving wedding - it really reflected the couple much better than some over-catered, stereotypical function would have done.
when (please g-d) it's my turn, i'm thinking of an outdoor setting (a wood or a beach), followed by a BBQ. other than that, i'm working hard now on making myself easier for my boyfriend to live with!
wishing all of you who are planning now/soon, a really great day and many, many years of a happy marriage afterwards.Boyfriend & I have saved £12K in two years, thanks to careful budgeting and keeping a record of what we spend. I've never paid myself this amount of money before - it feels great!0 -

We didn't want the fuss nor expense either as we needed money for a house- so we had a midweek wedding (less people to invite), our piper was a drinking pal (cost us £50 and a few whiskeys), everything was in a beautiful local hotel so a whole package was cheaper than having a church, cars etc and the honeymoon was our parents timeshare so all we did was spend like we had money to burn in 1 week, treated ourselves to the best of everything. The whole affair was about £5000 - perfect.0 -
Hey everyone
Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for ethical/'green' wedding/civil partnership rings?
We are looking at the following site (http://www.greenkarat.com/) which looks really good BUT on a down point ahem the company is based in the U.S! The company do not engage in destructive gold and diamond mining.
Any thoughts?
