I have convinced myself that it is okay to buy them from Canada because it is a tiny package

I don't suppose it would be too bad as long as you get them shipped, rather than airmail. =]

I know that it takes about three weeks to get here so I think that it is shipped and not airmail but I don't know that for sure. I will ask when I email them in the new year.

it all depends on what you mean by ethical.

The greenest option is to buy second hand locally - reusing always uses fewer resources.

If you want ethical as in workers getting fair pay and conditions etc then there are several sites including greenkarat and https://www.thediamondjeweller.co.uk that guarantee their diamonds aren't conflict diamonds.
https://www.fhinds.co.uk/Diamonds%5CEthical_Trading.html clearly state their policy and have obviously thought about all aspects of their production.

I'm really annoyed as I bookmarked a site that had ethical jewellery but I can't find it now and I suspect I deleted it as it was way out of my price range... if I find it I'll add it...

http://www.redpepper.org.uk/gg/x-jul06-guerillaguides.htm has a few ideas although I think they're mostly on the expensive side...

we didn't have a green wedding but we had a cheap one... one of the things we did was have olive trees with fairy lights (that we already had) (the pot covered in hessian tied with a ribbon) as decoration which were then given to the mothers (and a couple of standard rosemary plants on the top table with fabric covering which are now planted in the garden and are now huge and mean I never need buy rosemary ever again). I bought hurricane lamps in the sale and had them on the rest of the tables and then gave them as thank you presents to those who'd helped out. My mum made lavender bags as favours but I like the seeds idea.
We printed all the invitations etc ourselves and hand wrote the place settings.

the greenest option for clothing is to reuse or recycle as much as possible - either to wear something you'll wear again or to buy second hand (or both).
  • Hey this post is still going! Nice one!

I will check out all the suggestions and hopefully make the correct decision...:) I may well go down the 2nd hand route though.

Then have to make a decision about the venue for the party. Don't want to use on of those wedding farm venues as they are so so expensive! Want to do this the moneysavingexpert way and try and use a local venue. Lots of fun!

    :)

  • You've ordered - i'm so pleased! What wood did you go for? Post a picture if you can when you get a photo of the finished product from David & Nicola.
  • Our wedding was pretty inexpensive. Saved £ on the following:

    * Bought wedding dress on eBay for £28, spent another £45 for dressmaker to alter.

    * Invitations were "print your own" from M&S for a cost of around £5.

    * Bride & groom's flowers from local florist for £35; buttonholes for guests were silk ones from eBay for around 80p each!

    * First thought of being married in a castle, but this would have cost hundreds of £, instead got married in a registry office and had photos taken at castle afterwards.

    * Catered our own vegan reception (at our home... small wedding!), made most stuff except veggie sausage rolls from H&B, red pepper ciabatta from M&S and chocolate cake (which was our wedding cake) from local vegan cafe.

    * Bought a few bottles of champagne, but if we'd known how good Spanish bubbly is, we'd have had that instead for about 1/3 of the price!

    * Negotiated with photographer to receive digital "negatives" instead of prints for same package price, then ordered our own free prints off internet.

I want to move to theory. Everything works in theory.
