My mum lives round the corner. Does this count as a neighbour? She and my dad are in their 70's and still running their own business (shop). Perhaps I should bake a cake and take it to the shop for the staff? Would this do? 0 She and my dad are in their 70's and still running their own business (shop). Its the thought that counts - it doesn't have to be an immediate neighbour. The neighbour I baked for was actually across the road. So this definately counts!"A simple life freely chosen is a source of strength. Do not be pursuaded into buying what you do not need or cannot afford." Quaker Faith & Practice 1.02.410

Morty_007 - for the staff meeting
SarahSaver - for her community neighbours
Catznine - for her next door neighbour
Janeawej - for her neighbours last saturday night
 SnowyOwl - for herself!
Titan - for his neighbours, who usually complain!
Becles - for her neighbours in advance of the work on her drive
Bulchy - not a cake - but potted out pansies!
Natty68 - for her new neighbours
Aril - HM flap jack for her new neighbours
Bunny - for a family friend
GreenTomato - for the lady upstairs
 Beachbeth - for her mum
Thats a fairly impressive list of CAKE LOVE....."A simple life freely chosen is a source of strength. Do not be pursuaded into buying what you do not need or cannot afford." Quaker Faith & Practice 1.02.410

My neighbour is helping me to lay the concrete foundation for our garden shed. We were quoted £400 for the work but he said "Sod that!" so we bought the kit (£62), he is using his brothers cement mixer, has "borrowed" some boards from work for the sidings and is giving up his weekend to help me. Not to mention the cement and hardcore is in the driveway, 175ft away from, and uphill from the site of the foundation . I think a cake (or 10) is in order?!?!? OMG KiwiChick you lucky devil having neighbours like that! You're new to the area as well....I am so jealous! Even if you get him an extremely special bottle of something and make him your best ever cake, he has still saved you hundreds of pounds. What a fabulous person he is.
BTW Greentomato...the way you and your neighbours get on reminds me of what my last place was like for a long while. Funnily also in London! (You're not living in my old flat are you??)
I made a Weetabix cake this evening, and also some banana and blackberry muffins. I put extra cinnamon, mixed spice and nutmeg in them and left the back door wide open so "yer woman" can't have missed the niff in the air! First time time I heard her voice she was shouting at some workman (he downed tools and bogged off), the last time I heard her voice she was shouting "Let me in, let me in" cos her husband had got sick of her and shoved her outside. :rotfl:I might keep a muffin in the fridge in case she starts yapping again, then I can go outside and simply pop it in her mouth whole:D.0

I think thats an extreamly poor use of a decent muffin....
Can I have the recipe for your weetabix cake and the muffins - I'm useless at muffins....."A simple life freely chosen is a source of strength. Do not be pursuaded into buying what you do not need or cannot afford." Quaker Faith & Practice 1.02.410

Weetabix Cake - this is a popular one amongst Old Stylers - here it is for ease of reference.
 Heat oven to 170 C
 Grease or line a loaf tin (I use a 1lb tin, but I think you're supposed to use a 2lb tin...never mind!)
 Put into a large bowl:
2 crushed weetabix, 1 cup of sultanas, 2 cups of self-raising flour, up to a cup of sugar (half a cup is fine as the sultanas are quite sweet)
Mix these dry ingredients together then add:
1 cup of milk and a tsp of mixed spice. Mix it all up thoroughly.
Bung into the prepared loaf tin and bake for 45 minutes.
Lovely spread with a blob of butter and washed down with a big mug of tea.
 Banana Loaf
(I adapted this to make banana and blackberry muffins...not difficult, just put in a good handful of blackberries after mixing in the flour, then put into muffin papers rather than put into a loaf tin and bake for five mins less)
 3 well ripened bananas
165g sugar (can be brown, caster...any type really)
 1 egg
 150g self raising flour
 pinch of salt
 Preheat oven to 180 C
 Grease/line a loaf tin
Mash bananas, then mix in the sugar.
Stir in the egg, flour and salt.
Fold in a handful of berries if using
NB for muffins it is best to stir/mix as little as possible otherwise they come out tough
 Bake for 30 minutes.
And there is no way I am letting that woman next door have one of these muffins, they are far too nice!0

Funny, I baked a carrot cake for my husband last week, and because we are only two people it was too much. So I split the cake in three parts and gave two to our upstairs and downstairs neighbours. The girl upstairs was very touched. Her father had just died on the weekend and she said it cheered her up a bit. I didn't know that but I am glad I could provide just a little bit of comfort... I love giving home made cake to people! And I love baking too, so it makes me and them happy :-)0

It's surprising isn't it, when you go and give someone a cake how much such a little thing can cheer them up especially when they are having a bad time like Ajax18's neighbour.
Snowy Owl - I live in Forest Hill in London, I don't think its your old flat as the previous occupants didn't seem like the old style types to me!!!
I think I am lucky with my neighbours, but then since I have been at home with the baby I've seen a lot more of them, we help each other out a lot.0

They do this in America all the time. We moved to North Carolina and in the first week we had 2 cakes delivered from neighbours welcoming us to the neighbourhood.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0
