Just posted to the Ferry Companies

Ive just posted this out to all the UK Ferry Operators who run from UK to France.

................................................................................................................................

If this email is read by someone who is unable to respond with any authority would they please pass it on to someone who has.

As someone who is Disabled and now dependant on State benefits, it worries me that many, if not most Travel Related providers give Discounts to Disabled travellers.

Yet Ferry Operators, do not issue any reduced rates for Registered Disabled people. There is an untapped market here.
I travel to France around 4 times a year and will always seek out the cheapest fares, yet am continually baffled as to what ferry operators refuse to give travel discounts to Disabled Drivers.

Many Thanks

How does one afford trips to France four times per year on benefits please?
Only 3% of those registered blind in the UK have zero vision.

I don't think there's any law saying they have to give discount to disabled people - many do it out of courtesy.

One affords it by saving the pennies from the DLA mobility section of benefits and on foregoing annual holidays and from not smoking and from not going out to the pub or the cinema or the theatre and by not buying newspapers and by growing our own Veg and by camping at Free 'Aires' and by seeking out the very best and cheapest ferry deals.
    I could go on.
But I'd swap it all to go back to work and be pain free.
    Are you jealous?

I mean they cant line you up against the wall and shoot you for asking can they?

Yes I am jealous. I live on benefits and there's no way I could afford to go to France four times per year. I was simply asking the question of how you can afford it when living on benefits in the hope I might pick up some tips on how I could afford it too. The way people have jumped down my throat beggars belief!

After that response I hope you don't get any discounted ferry trips.

Then you really need to examine how you word a question, and you wont get pounced on.
It will also depend on what Benefits (I hate that word) you actually get. I get IB+IS+DLA and my wife gets Carers allowance for me. She does most of the driving. We have an old VW T4 that we camp in.

But fear not! If we do get offered discounted tickets I wont keep it to myself.

Don't think I could have said it any better than that. You've got your wife's income too and your own transport. I have only my own income and no transport. Plus I'm blind so can't drive myself anyway. £18.95 per week mobility isn't going to get me very far when I spend £20 per week on taxis just so I can get out a couple of days per week. And yes, I too would love to give it all up and go to work - I'm even applying for jobs! Get me!

I was just hoping a trip to France was on the horizon. Not four, just one.

  • We save a massive amount of money by growing our own Veg (well my wife does) we also have 4 chickens that give us eggs and eat all our scraps. We go to the beach and fish after digging the bait, also collect Winkles and seaweed to eat (my wife is Thai and she makes it into Thai food)
My wife is brilliant at sniffing out the out of date offers at supermarkets (best one 8 packs X 2 whole mackarel 25P a pack)
We run our VW on cooking oil bought from Cash & Carry.
Ferry prices in Autumn winter and spring can be as low as £10 return and many villages in France have 'Municipal' campsites that are free or just a few Euros.
I have to admit that, without my wife of 20-odd years life would be hard, but as she says, "living with me in the UK is immensely preferable to living in Thailand and cutting sugarcane for a living"
Oh by the way. I also built a Cobra Replica car. Got the initial kit by doing the website for the company then scrounged, begged borrowed and stole the other bits to get it built. Dead easy to get in, and I just fall out of it !

There is no such thing as " registered disabled" any more.

If discounts were to be offered, why should it only be to disabled drivers rather than passengers?

Tell that to Hampshire County Council.

Because the driver is usually the person that does the booking and is the lead name on most reservation, Therefore, any discount would be routed through him/her
