Have spent most the morning at youngest's school as he has been really struggling and they have had to call in his specialist outreach teacher (from the specialist autism school) 3 times in the last 5 days.

Anyway, she has suggested ways forward for him to cope but shock of shock, during a general discussion on subjects in the meeting, youngest complained that reading can be tiring with all the words jumping about and changing into something else all the time, something he has not really said anything about to me (he reads copious amounts at home), so now she has suggested he may have Irlens syndrome and he has to be tested (apparently very common for people with autism to also have Irlens).

I know I have problems with words jumping about when reading (was advised to have colour filters when eldest was diagnosed with dyslexia 11 years ago - I was diagnosed with a form of dyslexia also but never took up the recommendation as I had put up with it for nearly 30 years anyway) and my niece also has to have pink coloured filters/glasses but had no idea youngest was having problems too!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

My kettle died last night :( The lid came off and there were springs everywhere! The mechanism that holds the lid down had broken somehow. I resigned myself to months of kettle testing (anyone with hand issues will know what I mean!) but decided to look at the ones in Morrisons as I was going there today.

They had several that were absolutely rubbish - how anyone even with normal hands could grip the stupidly fat handle is beyond me! Then another had a nice handle, but had the on switch right where I wanted to put my thumb. But they had an own brand one at £12 that seemed perfect! And it lights up :D

Sue, you may want to do a search for portable reading filters for Meares - Irlen syndrome, I have a pack I use in my teaching. Perhaps the school could supply one for home use?
I also print on coloured paper for worksheets for MI students, something the school could do without too much hassle, perhaps?

    Hi all :)
Got the letter through today from DLA about my allowance and not sure whether to query it or not.
I've been given low rate mobility -fair enough as I'm over 65 and been given highest care rate for the care I need which is day and night.
The reasons given are for supervision when walking outside (can't walk and need wheelchair to be pushed) and help with personal care day and night but among the things listed I need help with there's no mention of the fact I can't cook/wash up, do laundry etc. as I can't walk or stand long enough to do these things, can't lift plus need both hands for my walking frame in the house.
Carers allowance doesn't seem to apply to OH but they do mention Carers Credit (Nat.Ins.credit ).....OH cannot work as he's needed to look after me so I thought I might get Attendance Allowance.
This is all a bit new to me so I'm mind boggled by it a bit. Does this sound about right or should I query it do you think ?

Not to drop the mood of the thread, but a dear friend of mine died yesterday afternoon. Liz was a fellow 'spoonie' - she had dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa, which kills 40% of sufferers by the age of 35. She was 25. I hate to think of her as a statistic. I miss her so much already. :(:(:( I've barely stopped crying since I found out, so am doing my best to distract myself until I can cope...

Trialia I'm so very sorry for your loss; so tragically young. There aren't adequate words, but know that you, and Liz, are in my thoughts. (((Gentle Hug)))
