Why do adults have to eat around supermarkets?

If this is true then it does blow a hole in the theory of a lot of the posters on this thread that it is not theft until you have left the store??
I dont think the arrest bit is right though as it has been pointed out it is only theft if you leave the store without intent to pay for the items consumed.
If the police where called they would most likely say to the store that no crime has been commited until the person leaves without paying and if the person then goes to the checkout and fully pays for everything what would they be arrested for?0 -

The signage in the picture above has no legal standing. It is a scaremongering request to comply with store policy, nothing more.
A theft can only be commited if the purportrator attempts to leave the store having consumed an item and not paid for it.0 -
I only posted the picture - I do not know the legal standing - Hence in my post it states "it would seem" and "If this is true".
However legal standing or not I think it is pretty clear from the sign displayed that 'management'
1. Do not want people eating or drinking in the store
2. Do not want people to eat items before they pay for them
3. Are attributing losses to the aforementioned practice of eating before paying

I KNOW shops have been displaying signs about paying for stuff before you scoff it, for years!
As for the legality of the notice you are a guest on their premises & as such, are expected to respect their policies. If they have such notices on display & you choose to ignore them, that's your tough toenails if they prosecute for breach of the peace or something.

That's a lame excuse - if you have a medical condition then be prepared and carry a couple of rich tea biscuits or glucose sweets around with you - simples.
The people that eat in supermarkets before they have paid for the items are just plain ignorant - no excuses.
I also don't think it is any different for kids - the parents should make sure their children are properly fed before taking them shopping not let them stuff themselves with bags of crisps whilst sitting in the trolley.
Standards are slipping but that doesn't make it right or mean we should just accept it.:hello:0 -

I agree completely.
I also think that if you have to eat on 'medical grounds' that you would perhaps grab a mars bar from the shelf and just say to the security guard / shop assistant / checkout girl.....I am feeling faint I am just going to sit here and eat this.....NOT walk around the shop shoving it down their throat. How many people feeling ill/faint' etc...want to walk around and shop?0 -
I remember as a child when we went to the chippy and had open bags of chips, there was no way I'd even eat a chip until the money had been handed over.
Obviously didn't get this from my mother though as I remember being mortified spotting her having a sweet from the pick and mix in Woolies, so I think it must have come from my Dad's high standards. Good old Dad.Make £2025 in 2025

I took the pics with my mobile phone. My mum thought it was most bizarre ...LOL:rotfl:
However once I explained to her why I was taking the pics and about this thread on MSE she was more understanding of my perculiar behaviour. She was however horrifeid that a shop would need to put up a sign requesting customers to do (or not do) something that was basically just good manners...:rotfl:0
