What happened if you got stuck in traffic?

you were paid for the time it took - so if a train was canceled, if traffic was bad, whatever - door to door.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

We used to allow an average of 45 miles an hour for travel, if you were using major roads, which usually covered this eventuality.

And not a public sector worker in site!

    My how needlessly complex.

The vast majority of companies don't give a monkeys how long it takes you to get to work and won't pay for it. Personally, and bearing in mind I support the OP here (as 280 miles away is certainly not in the local area of her usual place of work) I can't see why you would hamstring yourself with such a policy but that's just me.

OP - I cannot believe the Company will not pay for fueling their own vehicle as one member of the group has relatives in the area. This is plain wrong and needs challenging asap.

Don't see good practice and happy staff lucky.

EDIT: sorry was looking at member numbers and not employee numbers

The national trust has 2.5 million staff? Learn something new everyday....

Seriously though. Most companies do not do this and find lots of other ways to retain staff and keep morale up - just an observation really.

I can't believe some of these posts.

It is just so unprofessional, underhand and quite frankly desperate.

You have hit the nail on the head in an earlier post. This company are tendering for jobs that they can't afford to do. They are taking expenses to the bone in order to try and get some business in.

I have tendered for a range of jobs in the past and the golden rule is always look after the project team with regard to expenses. Preferably by the client paying t&m + expenses, if that is a no go, then fixed price with a minimum rate for hotels, food, travel expenses etc tied in.

If your husband is working under such conditions, I fear the company might not be trading for much longer and he should definitely start looking for a new role.

Staying at colleagues parents houses, phhhhhh! That is just ridiculous! Sorry, I wish him the best of luck for the future.

Thanks for that - I share your sentiments.

And he's on just less than £18K a year. So not exactly flushed with cash with which to pay for petrol, get himself meals while he's on away work, etc. :(

I'm going to dig out another thread about this place of work - regarding extremely dangerous situations involving works vehicles. (Another reason he's more keen to use his own car). I'll go and find it now and link to that so people can have a read of that one too. Truly shocking stuff!

    * Here is the other thread I started some time ago about some problems involving my hubbys company... in this case specifically their company vehicles *

(One of the reasons my hubby would rather travel in his own car).

How is it complex? Place 90 miles away - 2 hours travel time - very easy

The vast majority of companies don't give a monkeys how long it takes you to get to work and won't pay for it. We did not pay for normal travel to and from work Personally, and bearing in mind I support the OP here (as 280 miles away is certainly not in the local area of her usual place of work) I can't see why you would hamstring yourself with such a policy but that's just me. How does it hamstring an organisation?

OP - I cannot believe the Company will not pay for fueling their own vehicle as one member of the group has relatives in the area. This is plain wrong and needs challenging asap.

I think the OPs other half needs to get out - now!
  • If the company vehicle isn't being fueled as one of the members of staff is going to use the journey to visit a family member then why is your husband expected to chip in?

    Is it his family member?

Surely if the company policy is to expect the member of staff to gain all the advantage from the journey, then they should be expected to pay all the cost!

I would expect your husband to have already asked for the policies and procedures document.
