Is this legal? Expected to travel on Sunday for no pay?

Tempting as it is to go down this road, I don't think it is the right way about it. It is a bit like the second rate salesmen who knock on your door pretending to do a survey. When they are not interested in the data, just in pitching a sale to you.

If this gets messy and goes to an employment tribunal, the tactic could backfire unpredictably.

At base, the company are trying it on big time and at some point he has to stand up to them and tell them that they are out of line and they have got to do it right.

If they do not fund subsistence over a weekend, then they pay travel home. This is coming towards the end game. It has no further to go. Either he swallows it and lives with it or he has to dig his heels in and let this go to a confrontation.

Probably best to put in a travel expenses form and when it is refused, just turn up to the office and wait for them to provide transport or have an argument. Playing a less than genuine religious card is going to make it far more difficult to see this through, because he will be condemned to be faux religious for ever - the core issues will never be confronted.
