This is why I love MSE!!

Two people with polar opposite answers to a question, both believe they are correct, neither willing to back down! :D

As title, I've been house clearing and removed passenger seat to create more space in the car. Does it need to go back for MOT?

Phone the garage, speak to the inspector, before you take the car in,if he says you need it, you need it.

Fair play that's a ridiculously simple and common sense answer that was staring everyone in the face.

Just asked my OH (an mot tester), he says it's a bit of a grey area but...

If for example you remove all but the drivers seat you can take the car for mot and it will be tested as a one seater. If you then reinstall the rest of the seats after passing mot, it makes the mot null and void.

That sounds even less likely than a fail for not having a seat.

There is no mechanism for making an MOT null & void after it's been issued

Looks like we have a winner...
  • It still doesnt answer the original question.
Hannah, ask your OH what inspections are done to seats in an MOT. Not seatbelts just seats.

    From the manual......

    2. The security of the drivers or front passenger's seat is significantly reduced.
    3. A seat back that cannot be secured in the upright position.

Yes it essentially answers the question.

If you take it for an MOT with the seat missing then you must then use it with the seat missing until you MOT the car again.

Clearly using the car without the passenger seat missing on a permanent basis is not what the OP intends to do since this arrangement is purely to increase space while moving items from a house, so the seat will need to go back in after the moving is completed.

Therefore the seat needs to go back in for the MOT because no one in their right mind will MOT the car again in a couple of week's time when the seat gets put back.
