Hi again,
tbw - sorry, you're right, I did get the posts muddled up, it was someone else who suggested that ethics were an affordable luxury, so apologies for that. Just to be clear though, I didn't suggest that stealing was acceptable, I said that zenseeker's comment was effectively saying that. I don't see how it's rudeness to draw an analogy.
I agree that it applies to all animals, not just chickens (I wasn't particularly talking about chickens, although the thread was of course about chickens) and I find it particularly upsetting where pigs are concerned because they are so intelligent. Then you have the dairy farm industry which results in male calves being slaughtered as they are no use, or the fact that male chickens are slaughtered as chicks for the same reason. I wish I had a solution to these things that didn't involve everyone becoming a vegan
I do, however, think that someone should go without the odd Sunday roast if they can't afford to buy meat that's been produced from animals reared with higher welfare. You can have it less often rather than compromise on the welfare, as we do. It's not that much of a sacrifice. And I appreciate that you can't always easily buy higher welfare meat - I've been in supermarkets and not been able to find any, which doesn't help. I just think that where there's a choice, the animal's welfare should be higher on the list of priorities than the selfishness of the consumer and I get fed up with the "I can't afford to buy free-range" line - why not just admit that they don't actually care about the welfare of the animal because that's the truth of it. I wouldn't like the person for it (and they probably wouldn't care about that) but it would at least be honest! People like to delude themselves that they don't have a choice when actually they do and they are making one by buying the cheaper meat and trying to kid themselves that that's all they can afford so it's OK.
You say that someone should not have to give up a roast because a hard core say they must, but once upon a time people would have said the same thing about slavery. Where do you draw the line? Personally, I don't see any justification for causing an animal unnecessary suffering, especially to simply satisfy a desire.0 -

Ethics are a luxury some cannot afford, deal with it.
I agree that this statement is derogatory to poor people. In the charity sector I'm involved in I know plenty of poor people who have ethics.
And fairly amusing as most people I deal with on a daily basis who are on low incomes have the option of smoking, drinking alcohol and having satellite TV, so posts that make it sound like we're a third world country where people struggle to get enough to eat seem slightly exaggerated.
We all make choices - we should be mature and intelligent enough to accept that some of those choices are morally flawed and take responsibility for them - whatever they are, rather than be in denial, or blame something/somebody else.0 -
I was letting others know of the offer, it is up to each individual if they want to buy them or not. I was very pleased with mine, it was delicious...0

I always wondered what happened to them, I assumed they were reared and used for pet food. It's a shame you can't buy them, Cockrel is delicious ( I eat it every year in Greece) it's a darker meat and stronger flavour, basically more "chickeny".
Does anyone know a butchers in the North East that does cockrel?AKA: PC

First time I read this thread I went and looked for £2.50 chickens on the meat counter at one store, they didn't even have fresh chickens on that counter. But I went to my local Tesco's and they do have fresh chickens on the butchers counter, they're not priced at £2.50, they show as half price per kilo, £1.50 down from £3. I picked another one up today, just over 2kg for £3.02. The offer runs to something like 4/8/10. Prok loin steaks are half price too, I think they were £4.50 per kg, no idea if that's a good price or not without checking around.0 -
I got a free range medium sized chicken from Lidl yesterday for £3.77
