  • I've posted to an earlier thread and got some good advice from pinkypants, unfortunately I'm still looking to actuallly make the mattress plunge..

Basically we are looking to spend £400, we need king size, my girlfirnd and I are slim people, I'm 5.11 and 11.5 stn, girlfriend 5.4 and 8.5 stn, and sleep on our sides. Girlfriend has previously prolapsed disc so had sore back despite it being in the past now.

I'm pretty much narrowed it down to Romantica Madrid or Koseesleep Xilence, both seem to cover all the recommended bases (recommended on here), both turnable, both over 1000 pocket springs, both 11 or 12 inched thick etc ,,

The today there is an offer on a memory foam mattress for £250 allegedly reduced from £1100 on a weel known deal site. Not wanting to be conned, but with the deal being a limited period I trid to check out company and Mattress spec, but without much success (worryingly).

So thought i'd come and ask on here, company is Clouds ,, mattress spec is their super deluxe model ...

    their wesite is "cloudsmemoryfoam" .com

it says VC55 foam which I assume is their equivalent to V55. Has anyone (PINKYPANTS) any thoughts? It obviously sounds like a good deal, but it's only a good deal if the product is up to it.

Basically I need a mattress :-( so if this is rubbish, are either of my other picks andy good? or can you recommend teh best £400 alternative. I've seen Pinky recommend a really heavy mattress before, but it was out of our budget it £600, is there anything else you know of out there?

    Thanks

We got the Calypso - it's great. Wouldnt change my mind on that at all. It does say on it that it doesnt need turning, but it's the same memory foam on each side so cant see why you can't... Still, i think it's a great mattress for the money!
  • Thanks very much for both of those replies, very useful!!

That is indeed the company, and matress, and decscription .. lol

I pretty much knew it wouldn't be £1100, but sometimes these things can still be bargains, even if it isn't quit ethe bargain you required :-(

Thanks for the Calypo recommendation also, I've obvioulsy read earlier that it doesn't stand up in quality terms to the Madrid (although there was a suggetion; I don't know how fair; of bias in that comment/review).

Has anyone had a Calyso any longer for any longer period of time, did I read earlier that someone suggested the foam started to go in the hip region?

what about the Kozeesleep - are they any good?

All suggetions and help greatly received ..

    Thanks
  • Thanks D Ross,

Tim never actually got round to saying what he thought the difference was, I think he got disabled befoer he could post his video of the demolition of the Calypso. So teh memory foam depth would probably be what he was referring to. Although the literature on the Calypso is pretty specific about them using 50mm of V60, i'd have thought they would have been done on trade descriptions if it wasn't?

I know it doesm't seem much, but at £100 more one is just one budget and the other is over budget, but I can't find the Madrid for under £400 delivered, because if I could, I think i'd just be wading in !!
  • Hi all

Well I took the plunge and ordered the Apollo Calypso. The cheapest place I could find it was at FurnitureofStyle.co.uk where I paid £295, although to be fair Bed Kingdom did offer to match the price. Mattress was delivered within 7 days with no fuss at all. We have slept on the mattress for about a month now and although it was comfortable to begin with it seems to have become more comfortable with use. Both my wife and I used to wake up with a bit of hip and back pain but this has now completely resolved.
I did go to the well known retail park suppliers of mattresses as research before purchasing the Calypso. I have to say that in my opinion (and I am by no means an expert) I have found the Calypso to be as comfortable as the £1000 mattresses that they are selling.
    To put this short review in context;
I am not an expert on mattresses
My last mattress was constructed in 1996 (So perhaps any new mattress would be an improvement)
My wife and I are small (5' and 5'7"; 9st 8lb and 9st 5lb respectively) and so roll together will not be an issue.
I did research extensively and exhaustively to find the best mattress at the best price

Overall I am pleased with the Apollo Calypso to date

AND I can confirm that IT DOES HAVE MEMORY FOAM ON BOTH SIDES, although it says it is a "non turn mattress" (This might help put Tim's review in context also)

    Hope this all helps someone

Memory foam on both sides and says it's a non turn mattress, somethings not quite right there. Maybe the non turn label got put on by accident.
Helping the country to sleep better....ZZZzzzzzzz
  • As I said Pinky Pants, I am no expert. The mattress has got foam on both sides (I just gave it another poke to make sure) but the label says "Non-reversible, no need to turn". I don't know what the significance of this is or why it is "not quite right"

I think the clue is in you statement "it's got foam on both sides".

I think you have a one sided non turn mattress that has Memory foam on one side and a lesser quality foam on the under, non sleeping side.

Never has a double sided mattress say non turn. It's either one or the other. Turn or non turn.

  • Strange then that the product description from the site were I purchased it states that the mattress has 50mm layer of memory foam on each side and also the product literature produced by Apollo also shows a diagram indicating a 50mm layer of V60 foam on both sides of the mattress.

(Not allowed to post link here, but google furniture of style and search for the Apollo Calypso mattress)

....and having given the said mattress a good non expert poke and push it feels the same on both sides to me,

    ....still says no turn though

  • I think this double sided mattress says "no turn". Do I need to contact Guinness?
