Apollo Calypso Mattress

Options
Has anyone actually got one of these? After much research on here I want the La Romantic Madrid but the Apollo Calypso has similar specs and I can get it for £325. This is over £100 cheaper than the Madrid.

I know Tim has reservations about the quality but I'd like to hear from someone who actually owns one now.

Thanks in advance.

It's not just a case of me having reservations about the quality. I have first hand knowledge.

I used to own a Calypso myself, and over two nights I slept on my Calypso the first night, and a Madrid at my mother in law's the second night. When you consider that both mattresses on paper are the same spec, and the same construction, there was a huge difference in comfort and support.

I do have inside knowledge about the reason for the difference between the two, but for legal reasons I can't go into details on an open forum just yet. Although I wll be able to when I record a video of a Calypso being dismantled.

I appreciate your reply, however you have a vested interest as you sell Madrids but not Calypsos.

I would like to hear from people who do own one, hoever thanks for your reply.

As with all the advice I give, I was being impartial. The fact is that you will struggle to find people who have slept on both, but I have.

Also there is a very good reason why I don't sell the Calypso any more. If you knew what I know, you wouldn't go near them.

I have an Apollo Calyso, had it for about a year and am very happy with it. Like you I looked at these forums but went I decided to go for the Apollo as the cheaper option. I wouldnt hesitate in recommending it
  • I have an Apollo dual memory mattress, which is the one above the Calypso in the Apollo range. It's a year old and there's now a hollow where my hips go and it's getting very uncomfotable. At first I could 'reset' it by turning, but that no longer works. I don't know what to do because I purchased it mail order and the shops terms are that I must return it to the shop for inspection.

I hope they didn't charge you more than the Calypso, because the Dual Memory is actually lower spec because it has lower density memory foam on one side.

If the mattress is faulty, then you shouldn't have to pay for the return of the mattress for inspection. They should really arrange for an inspector to visit you. I would contact Trading Standards to clarify this.

Tim back in July on this post you said you were maybe going to dismantle a Calypso to look inside. I was just wondering if you did and what you found?

I haven't had time to yet, but I have a good idea from inside information, and experience from sleeping on one, of what to expect.
  • Tim,
Have you had time to deconstruct the Calypso mattress yet? After trawling around this forum in search of information to help in my decision of which mattress to purchase I have narrowed it down to either the La Romantica Madrid @ £419.99 (minus the cooling cover) or the Apollo Calypso @ £295. Now on the site selling the Calypso it states that the memory foam is 50mm deep top AND bottom. After researching both manufacturers I also found that they are located only 8 miles apart from each other in W. Yorkshire. Now both mattresses have very similar specs and are made by companies located very close to one another, are they in fact the same mattress? Or am I adding 1+1 to get 3. Just strikes me as an amazing coincidence!! Any light you could shed on this would be useful as it would / could save me £125,

    Thanks

    Hello Ciaran Mc Caul

    Welcome to the MSE site.

I'm afraid that the member Tim Deegan has the status PPR, which means posting privileges removed..........so he won't reply to your query.;)

If you read the Forum Rules, you'll see the following information to explain PPR:

forum_faqs_small_bubble.gifWhat's "PPR" under some people's usernames?
PPR (Posting Privileges Removed) is the term we use when we stop someone posting on the forum. The majority of banned forum users are spammers. It's important to note they can still read the site and forum (we never bar access to MoneySaving), however they cannot post. If they can't they may need to refresh their cache by clicking Control + F5.
If someone's been removed it could be for any of the following reasons:
    • Spamming
    • Advertising
    • Creating a "Clone" of someone else's username or impersonating another person to cause problems
    • Trolling (see What's a troll/alter ego? )
    • Resource Issues (consistently and inappropriately taking time away from the Forum Team's core work)
    Why are people banned (PPR'd)?
We don't remove people's posting privileges (PPR or ban) lightly. No one pays anything to use this site; and our first consideration must be towards protecting it from increased cost and legal challenge (although on mainstream issues of consumers rights we may choose to take battles on). Posting on MoneySavingExpert.com is a privilege not a right. We can refuse permission to post without giving a reason.
